The Irish got off to a nice start to open the 2017 campaign with a 34-10 win over Temple inside a full and newly renovated Notre Dame Stadium.

We tracked the Irish and here are some of raw numbers:

RPOs – Chip Long saw man coverage all night and took advantage by putting the defensive backs in a no-win situation. The Irish an 17 RPOs on the day as Brandon Wimbush threw the ball on 7 RPOs and two landed big scores.

Josh Adams scored from 31 yards out in the second quarter on a beautiful read by Wimbush.

3rd Down – Notre Dame ran the ball eight times on third-down against Temple and converted six times. The only time the Irish put the ball in the air on third-down were in situations with more than six yards to go.

Redzone – The run/pass ratio in the redzone on Saturday afternoon was 14:7. Notre Dame scored on three of those runs and one pass. Wimbush did throw two incompletions in the redzone, but the Irish only lost yards once when running the football.

Tempo – The average number of seconds left on the playclock when the Notre Dame offense snapped the ball.

TFLs – Mike Elko’s defense racked up 8 tackles for loss and Nyles Morgan led the way with three. Senior captain Drue Tranquill recorded two.

That number was up from five tackles for loss against USC to end the 2016 campaign.

Turnovers - +3. Interceptions by Troy Pride Jr. and Julian Love were the difference in winning the turnover battle against the Owls on Saturday. Tevon Coney recovered a fumble.

Notre Dame improved from a -1 showing against USC last November.

Rushing Defense – Notre Dame held Temple to just 2.8 yards per rush on 28 carries in the win. Temple’s longest run of the day was just nine yards by quarterback Mike Hunt.

The 2.8 yards per carry was an improvement over the 5.4 yards per carry average in 2016.
