Freemans's Practice Report: 8/5

Notre Dame was in full pads on Saturday morning for practice number five of Fall Camp, and it was a productive session for the Irish.

The Irish got in a lot of quality 11-on-11 reps and got the benefit of getting installs on film.

Quarterback Brandon Wimbush had an up and down day, and head coach Brian Kelly stated it was because of the installation part of camp. Wimbush might not be the most comfortable with 30 various route combinations compared to just five or six money routes.

Wimbush did start the day in the tempo drill hitting receiver Chris Finke in stride for a big pass. Fellow quarterback Ian Book got off to a sharp start in tempo as he completed six passes.

Notre Dame broke into individual drills for a couple of periods. Offensively, the offensive line and tight ends were working on blocking drills, while the running backs were working on agility and pass blocking. Quarterbacks were doing their drills, and the receivers worked on blocking and some route work.

The defensive ends came over to work with the quarterbacks, and running backs on option read. The drill was supposed to have little contact but senior defensive end Andrew Trumbetti planted running back Tony Jones Jr. on one of the first reps, which didn’t make all the coaches happy.

The defensive line then met with the offensive line in some half-line work. Three offensive linemen go against two defensive linemen and a linebacker. Here a few notes from that period:

On the other field, the defensive backs were working on tackling Notre Dame’s receivers, and it was better than in the spring. The Irish secondary isn’t the greatest tacklers, but there was an improvement.

The offense dominated the session, and Mike Elko was not happy with his defense. He replaced several players and let his guys know his displeasure.
