Adams and Notre Dame Offense Focused on Improvement

Notre Dame running back Josh Adams had high expectations entering his junior year, and he might be exceeding those through the first three games of 2017. The 6-foot-2, 225-pounder is ranked No. 5 in the country with 443 yards on just 56 carries.

Adams topped 2,000 career rushing yards last week against Boston College and did it on fewer carries than anyone in school history.

“It’s a blessing,” stated Adams. “I thank God I’m here, and I was able to do something like that because I wouldn’t be here without him and the guys on this team. Each guy here is pushing each other to get better. Stuff like that doesn’t happen on your own. It happens as an offense as a whole.”

The feat is even more incredible when you remember Adams was banged up for a large portion of last season. Adams already has some bumps and bruises, but he believes his offseason training has prepared him to push through the long season.

“I’m feeling good,” said Adams. “I’m feeling a little sore, but it’s part of the game. We prepared for it in the offseason and times like this, so we can last through games and recover quickly. Our conditioning has allowed us to bounce back and move on to the next game.

“I may limp, but I’m going to be alright. I’m still here. I’m going to keep playing and getting better.”

As Notre Dame travels to Michigan State on Saturday night, Adams will be counted on to have another big game on the ground, but also in pass protection.

“They bring a lot of blitzes, but it’s just like any defense we play,” explained Adams. “They are going to bring something new and something we haven’t seen. They are going play their best game, and that’s what we get every week. We’re going to continue to run our offense and learn from our mistakes.”

Adams and his teammates have put the time in the film room this week, but they are focused on themselves more than what the Spartan defense is going throw at them on Saturday.

“We’re not really focused on where they are at as much as where we are at,” Adams said. “We have a lot of things we need to improve on from the last game. The best way to prepare for them is to continue to improve as an offense and do better.”

The Irish passed the first road test last week, but Adams knows a night game in East Lansing will be a challenge.

“There is going to be a lot of energy,” stated Adams. “It’s a rivalry game, and they’re at home. I heard it’s pretty good up there. It’s my first time up there. I’m excited to play another game.”

As for another 200-yard rushing game, Adams is more than ready to show up on a big stage.

“God-willing,” laughed Adams when asked if 200 yards was on the table this week. “Running behind the offensive line is a lot of fun. It’s on all of us as an offense. It’s not just me if I want it, but it’s on everyone. I’m sure those guys want another game like that, so we’re all on the same page.”
