Austin Keeps On Going
Hurricane Irma shook up Kevin Austin Jr.’s senior season at North Broward Prep, but the 2018 Notre Dame wide receiver commit understands he was lucky.
“We made it out pretty good,” the Coconut Creek, Fla., native said. “Nothing major happened.”
Still, Austin and his teammates still aren’t sure exactly what’s going to happen with their season moving forward.
“We missed two games due to the hurricane and being out of school for a week and they were two conference games,” Austin said. “We’re supposed to be making them up, but we’re not sure when because everybody has different bye weeks.
“We might do it at the end of the season or we might just make up one.”
Austin was scheduled to take his official visit to Notre Dame the weekend the hurricane hit, so he had to cancel.
“It was really disappointing,” he acknowledged. “I was really excited. All of the commits were talking about bonding and all getting a chance to be there together.”
But he’s already got a new date locked in.
“I’m going to be up there for the USC game and a lot of us are going up for the USC game,” he said. “I know Phil (Jurkovec) is going, (Markese) Stepp is going and Micah (Jones) is going, so a lot of us are going to be there.”
That was a game Austin may have attended anyway, but he’s excited now that he knows he’ll be there.
“I was thinking about it, but I was getting ready for Georgia because a lot of us were going then,” he said. “There was probably an 80-percent chance that I would go, but I wasn’t positive yet. Now, this is going to be a for-sure thing.”
Austin has been impressed with the Irish so far this season.
“I think they’ve been playing great, especially last week against Michigan State. I felt like they threw the ball a lot better than they did in the earlier games. I know the running game was so strong and they really didn’t need it, which I understand because they’re going to do anything to win, but I feel like they threw the ball well this game.”
The biggest news of the week came earlier, when Austin informed Irish Sports Daily he was completely locked in with Notre Dame and will not take any other official visits.
