2019 Waverly (Iowa) defensive end Mosai Newsom‍ is quickly making a name for himself on the recruiting circuit and the 6-foot-5, 245-pounder was at Notre Dame on Saturday.

Despite the weather, Newsom enjoyed getting to see the program in-depth.

“It was cool,” Newsom told Irish Sports Daily. “We got there in the morning. I got to go on the sidelines, watch the game and went into the locker room after the game.”

Newsom was looking forward to speaking with the coaching staff before the visit, and he did just that. The Iowa native got time with defensive coordinator Mike Elko and defensive line coach Mike Elston.

“I hadn’t been in much contact with the staff before the visit,” stated Newsom. “It had been mainly through the mail and Notre Dame sending me game invites.

“I spoke to coach Elston and coach Elko for a little bit. Coach Elko and I were talking about my plans for the offseason. He told me he would keep in contact with me.”

The Waverly-Shell Rock standout was paying very close attention to the Irish defensive line during the game and came away impressed with what he saw.

“I liked watching how the defensive line worked their hands and the technique they used,” explained Newsom. “Everyone uses the same base stuff, but some of the stuff varies. It was cool to see what they did differently.”

It might have been cold and wet inside Notre Dame Stadium, but it made the atmosphere even more impressive to Newsom.

“The game atmosphere was awesome,” Newsom said. “You can tell football is big at Notre Dame. It was just awesome. It’s kind of hard to put into words.”

Newsom holds offers from Iowa and Minnesota, and it’s not a surprise Gophers head coach PJ Fleck has impressed him.

“I’ve met him a couple of times and sat down to talk with him a few times too,” stated Newsom. “He’s very driven and really excited about what they’re doing as a program. He’s doing a great job.”

Programs across the country have been impressed with Newsom’s size and athletic ability, and it’s only a matter of time before he has double-digit offers. Newsom believes his effort might be his best quality.

“I feel I have a pretty good motor,” he stated. “I’m trying to get better with my hands. I feel like I move well, but I need to get better with my footwork too. I’m always trying to get bigger, faster and stronger.”

While a decision is still far off, Newsom does know what he’s looking for in a program.

“I want to find a good fit,” said Newsom. “Academics are important in my life and for my parents. I want a coaching staff I can connect with and form a relationship with too.”
