Notre Dame Football
Considering the new expectations coming into Sunday, it wasn’t all that bad as the Irish did land an invite to a New Year’s Day Bowl.
They’re headed down to Orlando to play LSU in the Citrus Bowl presented by Overtons at Camping World Stadium on Jan. 1st, 2018. The game will air nationally on ABC at 1 p.m.
Notre Dame certainly bounced back from a 4-8 season in 2016 to win nine games this year, but after losing at Miami and at Stanford in the final weeks, the tone changed again in a hurry.
Notre Dame (9-3) landed at #14 in the final edition of the College Football Playoff Rankings, which were also released on Sunday.
LSU also finished 9-3 and ended up #17 in the final playoff rankings.
LSU rebounded from a pair of embarrassing losses in September – 37-7 against Mississippi State and 24-21 at home against Troy – to win six of their final seven games. The lone defeat came at Alabama on Nov. 4th.
Tigers quarterback Danny Etling has completed 146 of his 242 passing attempts on the season for 2,234 yards with 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Running back Derrius Guice is one of the nation’s most dynamic running backs and ran for 1,153 yards and 11 touchdowns on 216 carries this season. His backfield-mate Darrel Williams managed 776 yards and nine scores on 136 carries.
After beating USC, but losing to Georgia, Miami and Stanford, the Tigers offer the Irish one more chance for an impressive win to end the season, which would provide a great boost on the recruiting trail and momentum heading into the 2018 season.

Just a few weeks ago, Notre Dame was hoping today would be the day it would officially earn its first berth in the College Football Playoff, but after losing two of its final three games of the season, that goal was dashed.
