Mike Brey Notebook: Indiana
Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey spoke following the 80-77 loss on Saturday to Indiana.
On game:
“Extremely disappointed. I loved how we were ready to play, but we couldn’t get away from them. They played great. Give them credit. They made big plays. We didn’t make some very smart plays down the stretch of overtime. It really cost us.
“Some offensive rebounds – they didn’t crush us. They only had 10, but they got a couple of really big ones in overtime that hurt us and eventually got us.”
On not finishing in overtime:
“We’re up three, and that’s when we go green and switch everything. We don’t want to give up a three. We talk about when a guy drives, just let them have a layup and cut it to one. We’ll get it back and get fouled.
“We rotated over to take a charge, and it became a three-point play. As much as we work on our green defense, I thought we broke down a little bit.”
On rebounding problems:
“Tonight wasn’t as bad, but it’s just such key times where we gave up second shots. In a tough loss, I thought our bench did some good stuff. Nic (Djogo), DJ (Harvey) and (John) Mooney gave us good minutes as we figure out who comes off the bench for us.”
On forward Austin Torres:
“He is so good defensively. He moves his feet. I just love him in there. We put him in there in game situations defensively. Back on the other end, he could get fouled as he did.
“We have faith in him. He’s a defender and a veteran guy, who I thought would be good at getting out on Hartman. He’s quick that way. The problem comes to the other end of the floor, but I still like him in game situations because he’s so active defensively. Maybe we should have come back to him, and he would have helped us rebound down the stretch.”
