BREAKING: DJ Brown Picks Irish
Recruits often say the right things, but their actions don’t always back up those quotes.
DJ Brown is not one of those recruits.
The 2018 Washington, D.C., cornerback said there were no hard feelings when Notre Dame cancelled an official visit he had planned to South Bend in December, when the Irish thought they were full at the position.
When the Irish came back around a month later, he proved he was being honest by taking an official visit to Notre Dame with less than weeks to go in the process.
The St. John’s College High School said academics were going to be a major factor in his decision and he proved that by coming up with a final three of Notre Dame, Northwestern and Cal ahead of schools like Ohio State and Clemson among others.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder waited until today, National Signing Day, to make his decision public, but it was worth the wait for the Irish as Brown just announced he will sign with Notre Dame.
St. John’s College defensive backs coach Don Cox is convinced Brown’s future includes success on and off the field.
“He’s a very well-spoken young man,” Cox told Irish sports Daily. “He’s intelligent. His grade-point average is close to a 4.0. Off the field, if he sees something that’s not right, he’s going to be the first one to step up and say, ‘Hey, you shouldn’t be doing this.’”
Cox saw a huge improvement in Brown as a senior, saying he “transformed into an outstanding shutdown corner.”
“As a press corner, he uses that long frame of his to be physical when he needs to be, but he has great hips and speed that makes him a threat. With most big corners, it’s hard for them to move. It’s hard for them to get down to pad level to drop their hips…He’s a kid who I truly believe, if he stays on the path and keeps working hard, God is going to give him a chance to maybe have a career on Sundays.”
Brown joins Tariq Bracy, Houston Griffith and Joe Wilkins Jr. to give the Irish four cornerbacks in the Class of 2018.
