Polian Has Good Suggestion For NCAA
The NCAA can often be slow to incorporate things that seem to be common sense and even when they do, sometimes they leave more to be desired.
Such is the case with the new rule which, starting with the Class of 2019, will allow prospects to take official visits between April and June of their junior years. Put aside for a second the thought that with the continued acceleration with recruiting these days, maybe they should allow prospects to take those paid visits during the fall of their junior years, and Notre Dame recruiting coordinator Brian Polian brings up a good point.
The rule still restricts prospects to five total official visits and only one to each school.
Why?
What if a student-athlete doesn’t have five schools he’s seriously considering going to? Why limit the amount of information he and his family can get to make that decision?
“If I were making suggestions with the addition of the early signing date, and I'm speaking only for myself, I say we keep the limit at five, but why not let a young man take two official visits to one institution,” Polian said during his press conference following Notre Dame’s National Signing Day announcement of six additional signees on Wednesday.
Polian presents a scenario that will undoubtedly occur this coming year and for years to come where a prospect from a different part of the country wants to use their official visit to see South Bend during the spring.
“Ideally, you want them to see a game atmosphere here, as well,” he said. “I mean, there's nothing like Notre Dame Stadium and this campus on a game weekend.
“Now we're going to have to get into some strategic decisions about when do we want young men to take visits. Do we want them here in June or do you want them here in September when you've got Michigan under the lights and a national TV audience?
“Those are going to have to be some of the tactical decisions we think about.”
