After recently receiving a scholarship offer, John Metchie‍ looked into to getting to Notre Dame for the Irish’s Junior Day last month, but following further conversations with wide receiver coach Del Alexander, the 2019 wide receiver decided to push that trip back.

“I think Coach Alexander actually said to come out when spring practice starts,” St. James School wide receiver coach Mike Still said.

So, Metchie is now looking at getting out to South Bend in March or April.

“I think John is interested in seeing how practices are run and what that stuff looks like,” said Still. “He’s got a lot of tough choices ahead, he’s a talented kid.”

A Toronto native, Metchie enrolled at the Maryland prep school when he began high school.

“We do go to Canada often for kids,” Still explained. “We get good talent. Us being a boarding school, we’re asking kids who are 13, 14 years old to make a huge commitment by leaving home.

“I can’t understand what it would be like to be doing it when you’re 14. John is a young senior for us. He just turned 17. They start them early in Canada. I think it bodes well for him as a young man that his maturity is far more advanced than most high school kids would be at this point.”

Metchie has offers from schools like Maryland, Michigan and Penn State among others, and despite being young, the Nittany Lions actually pushed him to join their 2018 recruiting class, but Metchie stuck with his original plan as a 2019 prospect.

The offer from the Irish certainly excited him.

“Wouldn’t you be?” Still laughed. “The history and the lineage of the school appeals to him.”

Still isn’t surprised to see Metchie blossom into a national recruit.

“I think the biggest thing with John is how smooth he is on breaks,” the coach said. “He’s got this natural ability that you don’t coach on getting separation and making guys guess wrong. He’s a phenomenal athlete.

“I’ve coached a lot of years…he’s bar none, one of the best kids all around that I’ve coached; personality, work ethic and natural, God-given ability.”
