2019 Maryland WR John Metchie Making Plans To Visit Notre Dame
Not only do schools want John Metchie, some schools wanted the 2019 Maryland wide receiver right away.
“Penn State and Michigan and a few others were trying to get me to commit for 2018,” said Metchie, who received the pushes to reclassify before last month’s National Signing Day.
“I wasn’t really interested in coming out in 2018. I think 2019 will be a good fit for me.”
The Canada native feels good about staying the course he’s been on since moving to the States before ninth grade to attend the St. James School in Hagerstown, Md.
In addition to the Nittany Lions and the Wolverines, the 5-foot-11, 188-pounder’s current offer sheet also includes Notre Dame, Nebraska, Michigan State, Maryland, Mississippi State and Kentucky among others.
He considered a trip to South Bend shortly after receiving his Irish offer in January, but was advised to wait until the spring to make the visit.
“I am looking to get up there real soon,” he said. “That’s something my coach and I are figuring out, seeing what dates are available and when I’ll be able to get up there, hopefully sometime in March.”
He’s stayed in touch with Irish receivers coach Del Alexander and the staff at Notre Dame since the offer.
“They’ve just been telling me that I’m exactly the type of player they’re looking for, one who can handle academics and athletics,” said Metchie. “They’re telling me I’m the type of receiver they’re looking for, a speed receiver who can stretch the field and be quick on the inside. They’re just excited to get me on campus.”
And Metchie is looking forward to getting there as well.
“When I get up there, I really just want to get around the coaches a lot, get around the players and obviously, get to see campus because I heard the campus is really beautiful,” he said. “For me, the biggest thing will be finally getting to meet the coaches in person and meet the players.”
Even with a desire to spend more time around the coaches in South Bend, they’ve already made a huge impression.
“Right now, the biggest part of Notre Dame is probably the coaches,” said Metchie. “My relationship with Coach Alexander is a really good one. I’d just like to get up there and be able to hang out with him more on campus.”
Last month, Metchie took a visit to Penn State for the Nittany Lions’ Junior Day.
“It was good, but really I had already seen it all, so it was really getting to know the coaches more,” he said.
He’s looking at an upcoming visit to Syracuse and possibly Michigan and Michigan State.
