Instant Reaction: Freddy Canteen Transferring

It seemed like an odd addition at the time. As news was finalized today of Freddy Canteen transferring, it will be remembered as an odd addition.

After not seeing the field much aside from his freshman season at Michigan, Notre Dame decided to take Canteen on as a graduate transfer prior to the 2017 season. Partly due to injury, Canteen never was able to play very much at Notre Dame in his lone season for the Irish.

This is not a surprise at all. He was buried on the depth chart as a 5th year player. Michael Young, Avery Davis, Chris Finke, and Jafar Armstrong all showed this spring that they should be heavily in the mix for touches during the season. That sharpied the writing on the wall for Canteen.

Throw in the use of multiple tight ends frequently and a lot would have to happen before he would get on the field. That isn’t even accounting 4-star true freshman Lawrence Keys arriving this summer. I'm not sure Canteen would have been able to hold him off unless the coaches planned on redshirting him.

This also helps the Irish get closer to the 85-scholarship limit.

Canteen was not going to play much this fall for Notre Dame. Hopefully he can find more opportunity somewhere else.
