2019 Cinco Ranch (Texas) linebacker David Gbenda‍ added an offer from Notre Dame on Thursday night as offensive coordinator Chip Long watched the four-star prospect work out.

“Coach Long came down to watch our practice,” Gbenda told Irish Sports Daily. “I got on the phone with him, and he offered me.”

The 6-foot, 215-pounder was caught off guard by the offer and will look into the Irish in the coming days.

“I didn’t really expect it at first,” said Gbenda. “It’s a blessing. It’s a school that is on my list to do some research on.”

Gbenda holds offers from over 20 programs like Arkansas, Baylor, Houston, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ole Miss, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Utah, but he’s not focused on recruiting at the moment.

“I haven’t really narrowed it down to who I’m looking at,” stated Gbenda. “I’m enjoying high school, and I’m focused on finishing out the spring with my friends. I’m trying to finish the school year strong with my grades.”

While Gbenda hasn’t turned all his focus to his recruitment, it’s very evident coaches love his speed and ability to blitz.

Speed is an area Gbenda knows he has in his toolbox, but he’s also working on becoming a complete linebacker.

“My speed and spirit help me stay on the field,” explained Gbenda. “I’m still learning in everything I do, so it’s all a learning process. I need to work on being more disciplined on my role in the game and really getting better at all areas of my game.”

Gbenda does know what he’s looking for in a school and it starts with education.

“Education will play a major role in my decision. I’m grateful to for the chance to play football in college and to get a great degree and be connected to an alumni network.

“I’m also looking at where I fit into the system and how they want to use me.”
