2019 RB Julius Davis Getting Back In The Football Flow
2019 Menomonee Falls (Wis.) running back Julius Davis is fresh off an appearance at Wisconsin’s track and field finals, but the four-star prospect is itching to start getting ready for his senior season on the gridiron.
“Everything is really good,” Davis told Irish Sports Daily. “We just got back from State last weekend. I’m back in the weight room, but I have a little break right now because of exams. I’m ready to get going.”
At State, Davis’ 4x100 relay ran a 43.56 despite facing some adversity during the race.
“We actually didn’t do that bad,” stated Davis. “We all ran really good splits. It was unfortunate someone’s baton flew across our lane and our guy had to jump over the baton and not hit the guy. We almost hit a PR, so we’re not mad.”
The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder has also made some time to focus on football. Davis is making sure his game is fine-tuned for a big 2018, and that includes a little more wiggle in his game.
“I’m still working on my speed,” said Davis. “I’m trying to get bigger and maintain my speed or get even faster. I’m probably focusing the most on trying cut and juke a little more so I’m not always running people over.”
Davis attended the Under All-America Camp in Chicago in May, and it was a great experience for him to go against top-flight competition.
“It was awesome,” Davis stated. “It was the first time I touched a fumble since November. It felt good. I only dropped one ball the whole day. It was good to get coached by those guys and be around guys with tons of offers. It was fun competing against other people.”
While camps aren’t running back friendly, Davis felt he got better and embraced the challenge of the jump in competition.
“Some of the instincts some of those guys have and how they understand the game is completely different from some people here,” Davis said of the talent at the camp. “At the same time, we’re all at the same level and can understand the game the same way.”
Notre Dame running backs coach Autry Denson remains in contact with Davis despite his commitment to Wisconsin.
“We’re in solid contact,” explained Davis. “We just talk. He asks how I’m doing and how track is going.”
As far as a visit to South Bend, Davis doesn’t have any plans locked in just yet, but it remains an option as he heads into the summer.
“I’m not sure what I’m going to do with visits,” Davis said. “I don’t know if I’m going to take any visits outside of Wisconsin this summer. I’ll continue to talk with my parents to see what they want to do.”
Davis committed to the Badgers in November, and the relationship continues to get stronger each day. He will be in Madison the next two weekends, and he’ll likely be joined by 2019 Wisconsin quarterback commit and Notre Dame target Graham Mertz.
“It’s still a strong relationship,” said Davis. “I’m actually going up there this weekend when all the other guys go up there. I’ll be back up there next weekend for my official visit, so it’ll be pretty fun.
“We’re all really close. We have a big group chat and talk to all the guys about Wisconsin.”
