Having visited Notre Dame before, Chris Mayo‍ didn’t feel the need to see much more during his trip to South Bend for this past weekend’s Lineman’s Challenge Camp, but the 2020 New Jersey offensive lineman saw plenty and none of it disappointed.

“The trip was amazing,” Mayo told Irish Sports Daily. “I loved every part of it.”

“We got in on Friday at like 2 o’clock. We had a 4:30 tour. Our tour guide gave us the full tour of the athletic center and all of the academic buildings and the whole campus, which was great. He gave us details about every academic building and about everything in the athletic building. He gave us a tour of the meeting room where the team meets, he showed us the weight room, the players’ lounge, the meeting room for the skill positions. He also showed us where the players go to class, the study hall room for the freshmen. The extreme amount of detail the tour included was really, really, really well done. I liked it, my dad liked it and my uncle liked it a lot too.”

But the Peddie School standout’s chief objective was finding out where he stood with the Irish and that was accomplished during Saturday’s camp.

“I think I performed really well,” the 6-foot-6, 295-pounder said. “I learned a lot from a mind a run-blocking perspective along with technique and form. I only lost two of my one-on-ones. It was probably one of my strongest camps of the summer.”

The performance likely helped keep his name on the Irish’s radar, but it seemed offensive line coach Jeff Quinn and head coach Brian Kelly were well aware of Mayo coming into the event.

“After the camp, Coach Quinn said he liked me a lot,” Mayo said. “He said he liked my size. He liked the sturdiness of me. He said he saw a toughness and a grit and that he wants to further a relationship and would be in touch.

“I was really happy because up until this point, I didn’t know where I stood on Notre Dame’s radar but they all knew who I was and were all happy I was there. Coach Kelly said he was happy for me to be there. It was a really great experience all in all.”

Mayo, who has offers from schools like Rutgers, Syracuse, Maryland, Tennessee, Virginia and UCLA, doesn’t have any more visits planned for the summer, but would like to get back on the road in the fall and would be grateful for the opportunity to return to South Bend once again.

“I would love to come back for a game over at Notre Dame in the fall.”
