Notre Dame S Commit Kyle Hamilton Ready To Expand Leadership Role

Kyle Hamilton‍ spent the last several days hunkered down with his Marist School teammates for preseason camp.

The 2019 Notre Dame safety commit and his teammates didn’t have it quite as tough as recent years with the state association adding some prohibitions for the season.

“It used to be three-a-days with lifts and runs,” Hamilton said. “Now, we usually only have two-a-days and lifts. It’s not too bad.”

The Atlanta native even missed the old days, but just a bit.

And the most important goal of the camp was still accomplished.

“Team chemistry,” Hamilton said. “We build team chemistry without even knowing. We play poker for hours with quarters. We make great relationships here.”

They’re going to need to be together if they’re going to accomplish their ultimate goal of winning a state title.

“We lost in the championship last year,” Hamilton explained. “It was pretty tough, but I think we’ll bounce back from it pretty well. We just have to get the younger guys more acclimated.

“We just have a lot of young guys. We just need to get them to learn the plays and tendencies of other teams on offense and defense, how to read defenses. Our quarterback is a first-year starter, so getting him up to par and I think we’ll be fine.”

The staff at Marist will be counting on Hamilton to help with all of that.

“My coaches definitely want me to be more of a vocal leader,” he said. “I usually just lead by example, but they want me to be more vocal.”

Hamilton doesn’t have a problem grabbing that role, even if it’s not one he would naturally grab.

“I could definitely do it if I wanted to, I just usually don’t do it,” he said. “But this year, I’m going to step it up.”

And he also plans on making plays on offense and defense to help his squad.

“I know I have a lot to do on both sides of the ball, so just stay in shape and be available if the team needs me,” he said.

With his final season of high school football just about here, Hamilton called it “bittersweet.”

“Obviously, I’m excited to get to college, but it’s fun to have the recruiting process over so I can just focus on winning this year at my high school instead of focusing on picking a school,” he said.

Hamilton will be back in South Bend soon as he’ll take his official visit for the season opener against Michigan on Sept. 1st.

“There should be a good amount of commits there. We’ve been talking about it. It’s definitely going to be a crazy atmosphere.”

Hamilton knows the Wolverines are going to be motivated by the 31-0 pounding the Irish delivered in the teams’ previous meeting back in 2014.

“Last time Notre Dame played Michigan, we shut them out, so they’re definitely going to have fire in their bellies. The team is going to have to come with a good attitude and a great game plan. The atmosphere is going to be crazy.”
