Training camp has been tough for Brendon Clark‍ and his Manchester (Va.) High School teammates with lifting and conditioning in the morning followed by three-hour practices.

But it’s all worth it and for the senior quarterback, he’s actually going to miss it when it’s all over.

“I think it’s more sad because I grew up wanting to play for my high school program,” Clark acknowledges. “You kind of take the little things more seriously at camp, especially for your last one.”

A longtime Wake Forest commit, Clark backed off that pledge during the summer and eventually committed to Notre Dame on The Fourth of July.

While he’s looking forward to his college career, his current focus is on capping his high school years in style.

“I just want to win the first state championship for our high school, that’s it,” Clark said of his individual goals.

“That’s our goal.”

And he believes his squad has the talent to do it.

“I think we’re going to be great,” Clark said. “The biggest thing we have to do is focus on ourselves, not make any moment too big and focus on the opportunity at hand.”

He believes his team is complete.

“Our offensive line is amazing,” he explained. “We’ve got a really talented receiver corps, a few good running backs and our defense is crazy. We’ve got some new pickups for defense this year.”

Despite the lofty goals and the responsibilities that come with being the quarterback, Clark doesn’t feel any additional pressure.

“I just go out there and do what I do and play as hard as I can,” he said.

Clark does feel like he’s improved his ability to make plays with his legs as well as his footwork on his throws.

“That’s increased my arm strength,” he said.

He knows there will be increased attention on him now that he’s a Notre Dame quarterback commit, but he doesn’t think that makes him all that much different from many of his teammates.

“I think our whole team is kind of like that,” he said. “Just on our offense, we’re probably going to have a Virginia Tech commit and a Penn State commit on the same field with a few other kids with a bunch of D-I offers.”

And they actually prefer knowing they’ll be getting their opponents’ best shot each game.

“That only makes us better in my opinion,” said Clark.

Clark took his official visit to Notre Dame back in the summer before publicly announcing his commitment, but he’ll be back in South Bend for the Irish’s opener against Michigan on Sept. 1st.

“I honestly have no idea,” Clark said when asked what he thinks that trip will be like. “I don’t know what to expect.

“I think it’s going to be crazy, especially with College GameDay. I never got to experience that, so it should be pretty exciting.”

Clark is excited to get around more of his future classmates.

“I’ve talked to some of them on my official and they seem like a great bunch of guys. We have a group chat and they seem very funny.”
