We’re just one day out from Michigan arriving at Notre Dame Stadium for a primetime matchup to open the 2018 season.
Senior linebacker Te’von Coney is aware Saturday is a significant game, but he also knows his defense has to stay locked in throughout the week.
“We have to continue to improve,” explained Coney. “We are working to put everyone in the right position to make plays. Coach has done a great job of putting me in a great position to excel and do what I need to do.
“Everyone is focused on the game plan. We know there is more to do for Saturday. We’re in game prep and have things we have to fix before Saturday comes.”
Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Clark Lea has developed a close relationship with the Florida native over the last year and was a significant reason why Coney returned for his senior year.
Coney has put his faith in Lea, and the two have worked on improving Coney’s pass defense during the offseason.
“He teaches me a lot with leverage and understanding where my help is to play the guy well,” stated Coney. “I have to listen to the coaches, and it has helped me a lot.”
The Irish took a hit to the defense with defensive back Shaun Crawford tearing his ACL this week.
Coney knows communication was crucial before, but with his defense down a starter, it’s going to be even more important to communicate effectively on Saturday.
“I have a lot of communication overall with the defensive line and defensive backs,” Coney said. “We have to be on the same page, and if we do that, we can go out and just play.”
Notre Dame’s defense will head into Saturday’s game a little behind the 8-ball as no one can really say what offense Michigan will run with new quarterback Shea Patterson taking over the reigns.
Coney believes the staff put together a good game plan, but staying in the moment is crucial to make sure in-game adjustments are picked up and executed.
“The coaches have put in a great game plan,” Coney explained. “As players, we have to go out and listen to the coaches. We have to do our job.”
“We have to stay in the moment. We can’t get overhyped or anxious. We’ve prepared ourselves for this moment, so we have to go out and play.”
With all of that said, Coney and Notre Dame are fired up to renew the rivalry with Michigan, but also to open the 2018 campaign.
“We’ve put in a ton of work over the last eight months,” stated Coney. “We’re ready to face another opponent. To have the opportunity to do that on Saturday is pretty exciting.
“We have a lot of hungry guys. Everyone wants to get better and make plays. We have a group of guys that love each other and have fun. If you enjoy playing the game, you can’t ask for more.”
As he heads into his final season in South Bend, Coney is grateful for the chance to put on the gold helmet, but he’s also looking forward to showing the nation what he can do when the pads come on.
“I’m blessed to have the opportunity to play here,” said Coney. “Every chance I get, I thank the man above to play on this stage and to display to the world that I’m the best linebacker in the country.”
