Notre Dame has made a point to get into Louisiana over the last few recruiting cycles, and the Irish are keeping tabs on a 2020 running back from a familiar place.

Destrehan (La.) star Michael Young chose the Irish a few years ago and 2020 running back Kyle Edwards‍ hails from the same program.

The Irish have started their research on the 6-foot, 200-pounder and Edwards likes what he has heard so far.

“They came to the school to get a good look at me and talked to my coach," Edwards told Irish Sports Daily. "Notre Dame has sent emails to my coach and said they like me because I’m smart and an athlete. They feel like I could get the job done for them.”

Notre Dame isn’t a school that has come down to Louisiana often, so it’s a big deal when the Irish come to town and it caught Edwards off guard.

“I thought it was crazy,” said Edwards. "I really like Notre Dame as a school and the atmosphere.”

Edwards was just a freshman when Young played his last season for the Wildcats, but the junior prospect was watching the former Destrehan star closely.

“I’m not close with him,” Edwards said of Young. “During his senior year, I moved to varsity as a freshman and got to watch him play. I’ve kind of took the stuff he did and put it into my performance.”

Edwards is powerful back, but he’s also working on adding some finesse to his game to save hits and pick up a few extra yards when the time comes.

“I’m known for running straight downhill and not playing around,” explained Edwards. “I go straight through and score. I want to improve in the open field and try to break the defender down and make a move to add on more yards to the run.”

While Notre Dame hasn’t offered to this point, Kentucky and Utah have offered Edwards.

“My sophomore year, I really didn’t get a chance to play that much, but when I did play, I tried to play to the best of my ability,” stated Edwards. “To see schools notice my talent that early gives me more motivation to keep working.”

Edwards is hoping to make a few visits this fall, and one will be to the hometown powerhouse.

“I’m going to go visit LSU,” Edwards said. “I forget when the visit date is, but Texas State wants me to come visit too. Notre Dame asked me to come on an unofficial visit in the spring.”

It’s still early in his recruitment, but Edwards does have an idea of what he is looking for in a program.

“I’m looking for a good relationship with the coaches and the education,” said Edwards. “I know with my ability and talent God has blessed me with I can make it happen. In case I ever do get injured, I want to have the education to be able to make it and continue with my life.

“I want to go into the Technology field, but I’m not sure what I want to major in. I’m really good with computers. My grandpa always taught me things with computers.”
