2020 IN Guard Trey Galloway Enjoys "Outstanding" Notre Dame Return

Trey Galloway already has some major scholarship offers, but it’s clear an offer from Notre Dame is one the 2020 Indiana shooting guard would love to add and that’s part of the reason the 6-foot-3 junior was back in South Bend earlier this month for a visit.

Galloway was on campus back in February to see the Irish basketball team beat Florida State and enjoyed his return trip, according to his father and head coach at Culver Academy, Mark Galloway.

“It was outstanding, a fun open gym,” Mark Galloway told Irish Sports Daily. “There were a lot of NBA guys back, so Trey got to play against Bonzie Colson, VJ Beachem, Demetrius Jackson and Pat Connaughton. All of those guys were in there that day and it’s a lot of fun.”

Galloway also had the chance to catch up with Mishawaka native and current Princeton guard, Devin Cannady.

“Mitch Henderson is the head coach at Princeton, he’s a Culver grad,” Mark Galloway explained. “Mitch played here. They got their picture taken together and I sent it to Mitch right away, so that was pretty cool.”

Galloway and his father had a chance to spend some time with head coach Mike Brey and Associate Head Coach Rod Balanis during a tailgate before Notre Dame’s football game against Michigan.

“He has a lot of respect for Coach Brey and the Notre Dame Basketball program,” Mark Galloway said of his son. “He keeps up with the ACC of course.”

“I know he is really impressed with Coach Brey and Coach Balanis and the entire staff in fact. It seems like they’re trying to get to know him better.”

The Galloways were also struck by how many of Brey’s former players want to return to campus.

“It seems like he’s a players’ coach,” Mark Galloway said. “He stays in contact with his guys and they come back. That sends a pretty strong message when players are coming back to not only play, but see the coaches and care about the program. I think we’ve taken note of that, that these guys come back.

“His staff is made up of guys who played at Notre Dame or played for him, so they care about the program. I think Trey has picked up on that, how much they want to put that jersey on and play for the Irish.”

Galloway already has offers from schools like Michigan State, Purdue, Iowa, Butler and Nebraska, but the idea of playing in the ACC is certainly an attractive one.

“You’re going to get to play in arguably the best conference in the country with the Carolinas and the Dukes and the Virginias and Louisvilles and teams like that,” his father said. “As a high school coach and a dad, you just hope he’s good enough to play at that level. You don’t ever assume anything.

“Those are all great opportunities, but again to me, Notre Dame, Coach Brey has been doing it long enough that he knows what he’s looking for.

Brey was supposed to be at Culver for an open gym earlier this week, but a minor injury kept Trey off the court, so they had to reschedule.

“To know that he was coming to an open gym, that he’s still interested, that sends a strong message as well,” Mark Galloway said.

“I think they’re still evaluating Trey. I respect that too. They just don’t hand them out. They take their time and they’re definitely trying to learn more about his game.”

Louisville, Michigan, Purdue, Butler, Iowa and Michigan State have all been in for open gyms

“Coach (Tom) Izzo was here the first day they could be out,” Mark Galloway said. “Getting to Culver is not easy either for a lot of coaches, so when they fly in, you know that’s pretty serious.”

Galloway took an unofficial visit to Louisville earlier this month and will be at Iowa on an official visit this weekend, but there aren’t any visit plans beyond that.

“He’s at a military school, so it is tough to break free on the weekends,” his father said. “Luckily Notre Dame is close enough, 45 minutes away, we want to get back up there and continue to learn more about their program. Michigan has invited us, Marquette has invited us, Indiana has invited us. The farther the distance, the harder it is to get to. Iowa is the only official visit we’re doing. They’re flying us out this weekend and we’re going to the Iowa-Wisconsin football game. They’ve already offered so that makes a little more sense.”
