Walker Merrill‍ had the chance to say hello to former Brentwood High School standout Cole Mabry as the Notre Dame freshman offensive lineman and that wasn’t the only highlight of The Walk for Merrill, a 2021 Tennessee athlete who is currently starring at Brentwood, during his unofficial visit to South Bend on Saturday.

“I loved the Walk at the beginning,” Merrill said. “It was awesome to see how many people are involved and love the team.”

The 6-foot, 175-pound sophomore was impressed with what he saw in South Bend.

“Campus was awesome,” he explained. “It was beautiful. I like it a lot.”

The wide receiver/defensive back target also enjoyed the atmosphere inside Notre Dame Stadium for the game.

“It was great,” he added. “It was very loud.”

The Irish didn’t perform up their own standards, but still managed to escape with a 19-14 win over Pittsburgh, something head coach Brian Kelly stressed during his postgame address to the team.

“Listening to the coach at the end, they didn’t play their best,” Merrill said. “But they definitely executed and won the game and that’s what matters.”

Merrill, who has early offers from Louisville and Vanderbilt, believes he could fit in with what Notre Dame is trying to do offensively and defensively.

He’d heard plenty of positive things about Notre Dame coming into the trip and wasn’t disappointed.

“It lived up to the expectations of what everybody says about it,” he said.

“Hopefully I can get back there.”

He has one other trip already lined up.

“I’m going to Louisville in two weeks.”
