Mike Elko accomplished quite a bit turning around the Notre Dame defense during his one season in South Bend. What he couldn’t do was elevate the safety position be more than just average.

It wasn’t a glaring weakness like it was in previous years, but the safeties that played in 2017 were not very productive when it came to making plays. The two starters finished the season with a combined five pass breakups, one tackle for loss, no forced fumbles and no interceptions.
