Notre Dame can impress many recruits on the surface, but Landon Tengwall‍ got a deeper peek inside the program this weekend and the 2021 Maryland offensive lineman was blown away.

“I loved it,” Tengwall said. “It was a great experience, I’ll definitely be back up there.”

The 6-foot-6, 300-pound junior from Good Counsel said the people stood out the most.

“Everybody has got the fancy facilities, all of the nice stuff, the uniforms, but it was the coaches,” said Tengwall. “I got to meet with the o-line two different times. They were great guys. It was great to talk to them and pick their brain about what Notre Dame is like, how they’re treated and how they live. It was really interesting to hear about that and just get good feedback.”

Not surprisingly, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, especially with regard to offensive line coach Jeff Quinn.

“They all said they loved it,” Tengwall explained. “The big thing that they said was that Coach Quinn is almost like a second dad to them. He’s a great guy. I got to hang out with him most of the trip. It was just great to see how he interacted with everybody.”

Tengwall already had a very positive opinion of Quinn coming into the multi-day trip.

“You can just tell how much of a caring guy he is,” said Tengwall. “On the field, he’s going to be intense and hands-on and all of that. Off the field, he’s just so caring. You can really tell he cares about his players truly.”

Tengwall, whose offer sheet includes the Irish along with schools like Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Texas A&M among several others, also met with Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly.

“I got to meet with him for a little while,” he said. “It was good to talk to him. He’s another legendary head coach who was such a down-to-earth guy. It was like talking to another normal person, so that was great. It was good to connect with him. I had a really good time talking to him.”

The academic presentation was also a highlight for Tengwall, who made the trip with his grandparents.

“It was crazy,” he said. “The stuff they talked about, the connections you have once you leave the school. The #4For40, I loved that. They really showed you how true that was. They have 240 alumni clubs around the nation. That’s crazy. They’ve got one in Baltimore.

“Of course, everybody knows Notre Dame’s academics speaks for itself. All of the players told me that it’s really great and it’s not as hard as you’d expect. It’s definitely manageable if you dedicate yourself to it.”

Tengwall isn’t sure exactly when he’ll be back, just that he will.

“I’ll probably come back sometime later this spring,” he said. “It’ll probably be sometime before July because obviously you can’t come in July. If I had to guess, it’d be early-June or late-May. I definitely want to get back up with my parents to make sure they see it. It’s definitely somewhere that will be in my final decision, so I want my whole family to see it.

“Of course, I want to see more. I squeezed in a lot in a couple days, but I always want to see more. I want the rest of my family to see it because it’s a family decision. I’d like to hang around the coaches even a little bit more and get to know them even better, but I think this was a great start of me getting to know Notre Dame.”

Tengwall heads to Michigan early next month.

The Irish definitely secured a spot among his favorites this weekend.

“After this trip, I would probably put them in my top five right now.”
