It’s a big day for Notre Dame as defensive line coach Mike Elston will head to Port Huron Northern (Mich.) to check on top 2020 priority target Braiden McGregor‍.

The four-star defensive end took the last two weeks off from recruiting to attend an Under Armour camp in Cincinnati and then enjoy his prom last weekend.

It will be an important visit as Notre Dame would love to lock him up sooner than later, but it continues to send a message of importance. The Notre Dame staff (Including head coach Brian Kelly) were at as many of McGregor’s basketball games or at the school as allowed by the NCAA this winter and continuing being a presence is only a good thing.

Now, Elston and defensive coordinator Clark Lea have built phenomenal relationships with the Port Huron Northern coaching staff, so this visit will be about catching up with the staff, but also getting a feel for where McGregor is with his recruitment.

McGregor has gone fairly quiet following his official visit to Notre Dame, but things are also starting to become a little more clear. Michigan will be Notre Dame’s main competition, while some think Notre Dame is Michigan’s competition.

Alabama, Clemson and Florida impressed McGregor during his spring RV tour to the South. Florida might end up being too far from home, while the Crimson Tide and Tigers would prefer the Michigan native start his career at tight end, which McGregor was initially intrigued by, but he would prefer to stay on the defensive side of the ball.

“I’m leaning towards defensive end,” stated McGregor. “When I got offered as a tight end, I thought it would be a good position for me. The more I think about it and watch my own film to evaluate myself. I’m a defensive end.”

McGregor doesn’t have an exact timeline for a commitment, but I’d expect him to make one more visit to Michigan and then he could very possibly go into decision mode. I would be somewhat surprised if this recruitment went past mid-summer at the latest.

While it might not mean much, it is worth noting McGregor has yet to lock in a date for any of his four remaining official visits as of Monday morning.
