2021 North Gwinnett (Ga.) linebacker Barrett Carter‍ held early offers from Appalachian State, Duke, Kentucky, Temple and Vanderbilt when he woke up on Wednesday morning.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder had no idea his recruitment would completely change in just a few hours as Notre Dame and Ohio State would offer.

“I was very excited and surprised,” Carter told Irish Sports Daily. “I knew Ohio State was coming, but I didn’t know about Notre Dame. It was a big surprise for me.”

Carter knows any offer is an important one, but one from the Buckeyes and Irish is special.

“It’s huge for me,” stated Carter. “Those are two amazing schools. When I was on the phone with the Notre Dame coach after he left, I was just like ‘Wow. Notre Dame just offered me.’ It was just amazing.

“I never would have imagined being in this position. It’s a blessing and I can’t wait for the future.”

The Georgia native is also familiar with the Notre Dame program. Carter lived in the Midwest until he moved to the Peach State at the age of seven.

“I’m from Chicago, so I’ve always been close to Notre Dame,” explained Carter. “When I was growing up my parents always talked about Notre Dame. I know it’s a great academic school and football school. Getting that offer is huge for me.”

Position wise, Carter is listed as an athlete by some services, but his future will likely be on the second level of the defense.

“Any position that will get me on the field,” Carter said of his preference. “It’s probably going to be linebacker.”

Carter has made visits to Appalachian State, Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, North Carolina and Vanderbilt, but he hopes to add a few more in the coming months.

“I’ll be going to Ohio State, but I’m not sure when,” Carter stated. “Clemson, Duke and Georgia are the other visits I’ll be going on.

“If I go back home to Chicago, we will see if we can swing by Notre Dame. I’d love to get up there to Notre Dame.”

While it’s still early, Carter is a mature kid and already knows what he wants in a future school.

“I’m looking for a great academic school and that’s my first priority,” said Carter. “I want a school with coaches who will develop me as a person first. That’s huge to me.”
