Brian Kelly Notebook | 8.13
Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly spoke to Jack Nolan following Tuesday’s scrimmage.
On Tuesday’s four period scrimmage:
“It was really good. Both sides of the ball and kicking game – that’s as good as we’ve had in quite some time. Good tackling, physical running, ball pushed down the field – just a little bit of everything. Special teams was really good. Jon Doerer kicked it well.
“As a head coach, you don’t want one unit to dominate the other. I think there were good things on the offensive side, defensive side and the second unit as well.
“Phil (Jurkovec) threw the ball extremely well, particularly down the field and made big plays. It was a good day. I can walk away feeling like we got some things accomplished today.”
On what he wants to see on film:
“We have great pass rushers and we were screening them today deliberately. We’ll have to get a better feel for that defensively on third down. Offensively, find ways to run the football effectively against loaded boxes. That’s been the MO of how we’ve been successful finding those runs and run/pass opportunities.”
On a special visitor during practice:
“Coach Holtz was on campus. I texted him to see if he was available to come over and talk to the team. He said he was, which he is always available for Notre Dame. It just says so much about him and him being such a giving person. He came over and talked to the football team about what is it that you want. If you want a championship, you have to sacrifice. He talked more about caring about your teammates.”
On recovery during camp:
“Our guys recognize how important it is. I was talking to Liam Eichenberg and he was in the float tank yesterday, which is a way for our guys to recover. He said he felt great today. Utilizing the modalities we have available for our guys to recover and they knew they had tomorrow off, so they turned it up a notch. They know tomorrow is a day off and they can use all the things we have for recovery – dry needle, massage and all the laser technology we have now. Our guys can take advantage of it.”
Some interesting clips from the scrimmage in here as well.
