No. 9 Notre Dame at Louisville

Cardinal Stadium |8:00 p.m. ET | ESPN

Game Week Articles | Roster| Depth ChartSchedule |Staff Predictions

And So it Begins

It’s here. Notre Dame had to wait a few extra days, but football season is officially here for the Fighting Irish. First-year Louisville head coach Scott Satterfield will make his debut and he’ll likely have his hands full on Monday night as the Irish enter the game as the far superior team.

Louisville has 18 players who started at least five games last season, so the Cardinals are experienced, but it is the same players who gave up in the middle of the 2018 season.

Notre Dame simply needs to execute and stay out of their own way to leave Louisville with a victory. If the Irish can build good habits, it would be a positive as Notre Dame is looking to get back to the College Football Playoff.

Five Players To Watch

Notre Dame WR Chase Claypool
He had a dominant fall camp after a terrific spring. Now we get to see if it translates to the games. Look for him to win consistently on the 50/50 balls. He should have a big day on his way to a monster senior season.

Louisville LB Rodjay Burns
Burns started nine games at cornerback last season, but struggled like most players on Louisville's defense did. He moved to linebacker and is playing their version of the Rover. Can he cover a slot like Lawrence Keys? Expect to see Burns blitzing quite a bit.

Notre Dame S Kyle Hamilton
How much will Hamilton play? We don't know, but everyone is excited to find out. No one will be shocked if he ends up making an impact play or two even if he's only sees limited action in his first action in college football.

Louisville WR Tutu Atwell
The smallest player on Louisville's roster is probably the fastest. If they are going to have a chance in this matchup, they need someone like Atwell to produce an explosive play.

Notre Dame LB Drew White
All eyes will be on the linebacker position and White in his first start. He has big shoes to fill at Mike linebacker and must play well to keep his spot. It will be interesting to see how many snaps he plays compared to others who will play at inside linebacker.

By The Numbers

1 - Notre Dame will be playing its first game ever on Labor Day Monday.

2 - Monday will be the second meeting between Notre Dame and Louisville.

11 - Notre Dame has won 11 consecutive games at Notre Dame Stadium. It's the third-longest winning streak at home for the Irish since the stadium opened in 1930.

77 - Notre Dame 13-4 (.765) all-time in season-opening prime time games.

200 - Notre Dame is the only FBS program with three different 200-yard rushers in the last two seasons.

Quotes of the Week

Notre Dame QB Ian Book:
“I feel like every game at Notre Dame is a statement game. We have a big target on our back. There are a lot of haters and doubters. There is a lot of talk about not being in a conference and winning every game.

“We know that. We try to treat every game like a playoff game. We definitely want to go 1-0. That’s what we’re thinking about and focused on.”

Notre Dame S Alohi Gilman:
“We’re not sitting back on Monday night. This game doesn’t have to be close.”

Notre Dame DE Khalid Kareem:
“We were right there. We tasted it. We were a game away from a National Championship. We’re hungry and ready. This group of guys is a very talented group of people. We can go out and show the world what we can do.”

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly:
“I'll just leave it at this. One guy that we haven't talked much about, and I will just say that he's had his best camp since he's been here is Daelin Hayes. I think that says a lot about what we can do when we haven't talked about a guy like that.”

Amazing that Book can look rattled. This is not a hostile environment.

Louisville has a good game plan. We obviously need to make adjustments. No need to say the season is over yet.

Typical Kelly - "[Book's] just got to trust his coaching." Yeah, your coaching is never at fault.

I'm so disappointed in Book.

Guy is rattled in the backfield. Fear that may be who he is.

Can't coach nerves.

In addition, receivers have to give Book something. They are not trying to get open at all.

I guess the defensive coaches saw what I saw with Bilal, as he played minimal snaps after a terrible start. And to be clear, I'm rooting for the kid. It made sense to start him because of the road environment and his experience. But he played like a stinky butthole. And Simon made quite a few mistakes but we have seen what we get from Bilal so that was a welcome move,

Loyal, 98% of this board have very similar feelings about you the person as you feel about Book and the team. You sir are a bore and troll.

First half thoughts...So Ian Book, since the Clemson game last year he will not go through his progressions. We seem to have QB who develop mental yips (Wimbush short passing game) that are just bizarre. Book used to be so good with progressions in the short passing game and has Finke and Claypool. I think Jafar hurt his arm/wrist which may be hurting the passing game as well, but this was an absolute mess. He may fix this in the second half but this thing tends to not go away. Very disappointed.

On the flipside good defensive adjustments. Our ILB's will be poor all year but JOK is gonna be special.

Book not playing well, but our receivers are not getting ope either,

Are you sure? They have not shown much on TV to tell but I've seen a number of pass defenders closing on Book's constant runs and unless they are dropping 8 or 9 on every play - the numbers say someone is open.

Also, Wright was not really open but Book could have thrown a low ball and given him a chance to make a play.

Guys, we can criticize a player's play, with some intelligence. Totally allowed.

We aren't going to personally attack and slander college kids. That's embarrassing.

Please let this be the only warning.

He gives the OL less than .5 seconds to set before he goes full panic mode. It's baffling

Cool story. You are probably pumped by how hard the team is playing. Or something

Ist half is done. Lea has to emphasize that. After their first 2 scoring drives the Cards have around 50 yds.

Lea is in the upstairs box isn't he. I bet we see a better defense this 2nd half.

I know IrishLoyal personally. He's a great guy and funny as hell. He's emotional about ND but so is this entire board. Every time someone is super negative, the super homers come out and attack the guy. And what I guarantee you is happening, is all the angry posts are fueling IrishLoyal to post more and more.

I miss the mods taking over and analyzing the plays without the "Romper Room" participation. Maybe ISD needs 2 gameday boards one for Matt & Jamie & the 2nd one for posters.

I will refrain moving forward. But this is a pathetic performance any everyone here knows it.

I guess to put any kind of shine on that turd, I thought the defense settled in really well after the second score and that Drew White was outstanding. Bramlet punted well and Jones as well as we've ever seen him.

Ok, that's pretty much about it. This was Ball St bad. I'm as frustrated as anybody but I think we'll physically wear them down in the second half.

Progressions aside - if there is a pre snap 15 yard cushion on Finke take the free 5-7 yard pass.

One of the 5 RBs dropped a swing pass that was wide open and we never threw another one.

You are a younger version of me, HA. Keep posting man it is partially a way to cope with the totally unexpected (bad) stuff. I'm getting old and am getting kind of indifferent and enjoying the fact ND is on, and hopefully they can play better in the second. We need Book to play like Book!

The guy is a complete tool and POS.

I am a fan, not a homer. There are issues to be resolved. No doubt.

But give it a f'ing rest.

Defense started out poorly without a QB spy and was getting beat by the speed option/quick sprint run plays. They seemed to have rolled in 1-2 guys to spy Pass and have done a good job locking that back down.

Offense, aside from the running game, looks atrocious. First drive was great with the running, but it appears Jafar is out for a bit and Book has the happy feet/tremors about staying in the pocket. He has been locking in to Claypool and not looking off or to other check downs. He seems to be going (1) look at Claypool/primary option (2) if not (1), tuck and run. TE seams and drags have been open, but maybe Book is too short to see them?

Oh c'mon no one on this board is gone unless they get banned. I know that feeling. Just let him go, it's fine we are all cheering for the same team here and this was a poor first half especially by our QB.
