2020 Notre Dame WR Commit Xavier Watts Gets Sneak Peek At Future
Xavier Watts and Drew Pyne took imagining their time out in Notre Dame Stadium to a different level during the Irish’s win over archrival USC in South Bend on Saturday night.
“Me and Drew Pyne were messing around during the game doing commentating and stuff,” said Watts, a 2020 Irish receiver commit, of himself and the 2020 Notre Dame quarterback commit.
We were like, ‘Drew Pyne to Xavier Watts!!!’”
Watts acknowledged an additional sense of urgency and energy in the stadium knowing he would be out there next year.
“It’s more exciting,” he said. “I was really into it cheering and stuff.”
It was an exciting weekend overall with Notre Dame defeating the Trojans 30-27 in a primetime atmosphere and several recruits on campus.
“The game was great, getting to see the coaches again, getting to hang out with some commits and some players too was great as well,” Watts told Irish Sports Daily afterward.
“I think they played pretty good. They had a couple bad moments, but they still played pretty good.”
Including Watts, there were nine commits from the Class of 2020 in town.
“It was good to actually meet them face to face and be around them just to see how we interact with each other,” said Watts. “I think we all got along pretty well.”
The Nebraska native spent most of his time with Pyne, tight end commit Michael Mayer and fellow receiver pledge Jordan Johnson.
“We’re going to be teammates for the next four years, so we don’t want it to be awkward,” said Watts. “We want to be able to know each other and have each other’s backs, so it’s good to have a relationship.”
Watts got his first look at the now-completed indoor facility on campus.
“It was super nice,” he said. “It was already looking nice when I was there and it wasn’t finished. Now, it’s just amazing how good it looks.”
The message from the coaching staff to the 5-foot-11, 188-pounder was a simple one.
“Just be ready and come in to contribute early, just be prepared basically.”
