It’s already apparent Dane Key‍ is going to be a name to know for the next couple years.

The 2022 Kentucky wide receiver has early offers from the top in-state programs – Kentucky and Louisville – among others while earning interest from even more major schools.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pound sophomore was at Notre Dame for the Irish’s game against USC last week.

“It was great,” Key told Irish Sports Daily afterward. “I got to see the beautiful campus that they have.

“The indoor facility, I can’t even explain how nice it was.”

He was also impressed with the Gug.

“It was nice, just the history in there and how nice it was,” said Key.

The crowd inside Notre Dame Stadium for the Irish’s 30-27 victory over USC also struck Key.

“I’d never seen an atmosphere like that before,” he said. “All of the fans were so loud and energetic.

“Notre Dame played good. I didn’t stay the whole game, but until I left, they played good.”

While there, Key had the chance to picture himself on the field.

“I was imagining myself down there, thinking about the things I would do down there,” he said.

Rather than focusing in on any single wide receiver, Key was drawn to Irish tight end Cole Kmet.

“He was good,” Key said. “I could see myself playing like him one day.

“I could see myself putting on a few pounds and playing tight end in the future.”

He spoke with Notre Dame wide receivers coach Del Alexander, who “seems very interested in me.”

Key would welcome the opportunity to get back to South Bend in the future, but recruiting isn’t at the top of his priority list at the moment.

“I’m just really focused on my season right now,” he said. “Hopefully, I’ll be able to go back up there one day to see more of the campus and get to know the coaches a little bit more.

“I really liked the campus. I would like to see more of the dorms and how they look inside. Everything else I saw around campus, I liked. I’d like to see more and more of the campus.”

Key doesn’t have any other visits set just yet.

“I guess I’m just going to see how it goes from here.”
