Del Alexander Giddy About 2020 Receiver Class
Notre Dame receivers coach Del Alexander was giddy on Wednesday as the Irish signed Jay Brunelle, Jordan Johnson and Xavier Watts.
Alexander, much like the Notre Dame fanbase, knew the Irish needed to hit in 2020 and he did just that.
"These guys are all football players," stated Alexander on Notre Dame's Signing Day show. "I think they're physically developed. (I get) the opportunity to fill their heads with information and get them ready to play early."
Brunelle and Watts will arrive in January, which also made Alexander excited.
"I think them coming to campus early and being able to practice and train with Coach Balis is important," Alexander said. "When we get to the fall, they'll be in a position where they're familiar with the guys and routines."
Brunelle's recruitment wasn't always trending towards Notre Dame, but Brunelle took matters into his own hands.
Brunelle showed up at Irish Invasion in June and made it impossible for the Irish not to offer him after being on the fence for several months.
"Having known him for a little while and started the recruiting process - he came out determined to prove he was fast and he was physical," explained Alexander. "He was everything we needed in a receiver."
Johnson was the opposite of Brunelle as he was one of the most coveted receivers in the country.
"He's a competitor," Alexander said. "He loves the stage and loves to compete. He loves to go out and prove he's one of the best receivers in the country in high school.
"We're looking forward to him having the same mentality when he gets to campus."
Perhaps the most exciting thing about all three is the fit. There is little concern about how each one will adapt to Notre Dame and embrace the challenges ahead.
"They're a great fit," said Alexander. "These guys will fit in the locker room. They're like-minded guys with the guys we already have. These guys are really good students and take care of their business off the field. They love football.
"Everything a Notre Dame guy is about is loving football and handle everything Notre Dame is about off the field."
