Camping World Bowl | Iowa State (7-5) vs. No. 15 Notre Dame (10-2)

Game Week Articles | Roster| Depth ChartSchedule |Staff Predictions

Don’t Freak Out

Notre Dame will look to get its 11th win on Saturday, but it could get off to a slow start. Tommy Rees will be in his first game calling plays and he’ll face an experienced defensive coordinator in Jon Heacock, who runs a complicated 3-5-3/3-3-5 defense.

The Fighting Irish see a variety of defenses every year, but Notre Dame has yet to face a scheme similar to the one they’ll see on Saturday.

A slow start might not mean the Irish aren’t ready to play, although it very could, as there will be an adjustment period for Rees and quarterback Ian Book. The senior signal-caller will see looks he hasn’t seen before and you can expect Heacock to throw the kitchen sink at the Irish offense.

While there will be overreactions in this thread, I’d encourage you to give the Irish a few series to get used to the defense and for Rees to grow into his new role.

On the other side of the ball, Notre Dame enters the game giving up just 163.7 passing yards per game and there is a good chance Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy exceeds that in the first half.

Don’t freak out.

Notre Dame is going to give up yards and it will probably seem like they are getting shredded compared to most games, but that’s Clark Lea’s defense. The Irish are going to give up yards, but they will also make the Cyclones take care of the ball and force them into touchdowns, which the Irish have been very successful at this year as they’ve given up just 18.7 points per game.

Purdy and Iowa State have moved the ball, but they have also lost five games this season. Notre Dame needs to make Purdy finish drives and not get discouraged by stats on Saturday.

Five Players To Watch

Notre Dame TE Cole Kmet
Will this be his final game for Notre Dame? It could be and the chances for that go up if he goes off on the field. Expect him to have a big day.

Iowa State LB O'Rien Vance
The Mike linebacker for Iowa State is a key to their pass rush. He's a very good blitzer and knows when to attack on when the running back is engaged with another defender.

Notre Dame WR Braden Lenzy
He touched the ball more than he had all season and was a difference-maker against Stanford. Look for Tom Rees to get Lenzy involved often to help provide the offense with explosive plays.

Iowa State TE Charlie Kolar
ISU has a great tight end as well. Kolar will be a tough matchup for the Irish and we should see Kyle Hamilton in man against him frequently.

Notre Dame DE Khalid Kareem
Notre Dame's pass rush has to get to quarterback Brock Purdy and affect his rhythm as they have with most passers this season. Kareem is the key to that and if he can be as dominant as he's been in the final half of the season, it will be a huge factor in stopping their potent passing game.

Quotes of the Week

DE Khalid Kareem:
"You look back - Q (Quenton Nelson) and Mike (McGlinchey) were two top 10 draft picks. I don't think they questioned not playing. If guys like that didn't sit out, then why should we?"

LB Drew White:
"They're an electric offense. They have some really good skill playmakers and a really good quarterback. They like to throw the ball and have a lot of hard concepts.

"We have to dig deep into the game plan and make sure we're ready. I'm confident we'll be ready."

OL Liam Eichenberg:
"A lot of offensive lines have struggled blocking this defense. There is so much movement. They're a very good team. The defensive coordinator does a good job and they have great players. That program is really turning around."

WR Braden Lenzy:
"You shouldn't be at Notre Dame if you're not a competitor. If you don't go out there and win, then you probably shouldn't be here. It's simple."

Everything available about the 3-3-5 and 3-5-3 defenses notes the free releases of the TE and opportunities available there in. Number of passes to our excellent TEs who are matchup problems, zero. Lack of that and the insistence on perimeter running with plow horse running backs is a pretty curious game plan design.

Happy with the lead. Not happy with the offensive gameplan.

A lot of bizarre decisions. If you're gonna run Tony as your primary back, stop running him outside. It didn't work against New Mexico, it didn't work against Michigan, it hasn't worked all damn season. Stop it.

Well it's worked and killed clock and kept the ball away from ISU. And we're up 20-6. Conservative? Yes, but it's worked and we have had some deep shot plays mixed in.

Good half
Need to punch them in the mouth to start the second half, they will not go away easily

It's super awesome that our CBs never turn their heads.
they are not trained to. That's not the technique they are taught
I can't imagine that's possible. Every HS in America teaches a different technique.

This has been discussed over and over again on this board. Todd Lyght teaches his corners to read the wide receivers eyes and rip through their arms when the receiver puts his arms or hands up. This info should be pinned to the top of the premium forum. You may not agree with it (and many others don't) but it's what Lyght teaches.
I apologize for not reading every thread on the board. My bad.

B. I liked some of the stuff they did. He really tried to establish a running game. Just my 2 cents

Respectable. I'd like to see more Tight end involvement in the passing game but over all he's done a decent job for his first time.

For the first half of his play calling career against a defense no one ever sees I'll give him a solid B

You can't have a talent like Kmet and not gameplan him your offense. That's just stupid to have TE's like Kmet,Tremble and Wright and not take advantage of it.Also, for the love of God why run TJ wide knowing his lack of speed to get to the edge.Hell,if anything run a wheel route to TJ.I haven't seen that play since he scored against USC last year. Please, let's take advantage of uber talented players like Kmet,Lenzy,Tremble.Chase is just a stallion out there, but the playcalling is not letting us utilize some of our strengths and advantages we have in matchups.

A 5/10. Too conservative and still not getting the ball to playmakers (outside of Claypool) where they can make plays (ie deep balls to Lenzy, Jahmir and C'Bo running it, Kmet up the seam or post corner, etc).

Yeah B
If we didn't have a beast like Claypool I'd say C but he's been smart enough to let Rees take some shots down field to him as ISU can't possibly cover him.

Chase Claypool: 4 receptions, 112 rec yards, 1 rec TD. It's his third game with 100+ rec yds this season.

Hard to tell, as execution has been poor. Did not like all the dink passes to start. Seems to be getting better with some deeper passes.

I also say B B- however I am no expert but in my opinion it looked as though the RBs hamstrung the O as it has all season. Just hard to set up big pass plays open up the offense when the D doesn't worry about a back breaking a big run.

Fair. The stretch play's with TJ are mind boggling.

I think he needs to attack in the second half. Yes they're up 14, but ISU is still dangerous on offense.

20 points 200 yds against a crazy ass defense not bad. 2nd half needs to be better though.

Positives:
  • 20 points in a half is good.
  • Focusing on running game to wear down smaller defense.
  • His running set up the pass (with ND the pass usually sets up the run).
  • No turnovers.
  • When ND was pinned deep they got a first down to help field position.

Negatives:

  • Starting game 3 and out.
  • Throwing 3rd down pass to Lenzy one yard before 1st down marker (why does ND always do this)?
  • Would like to see him passing to the the Tight Ends a bit

Tommy's playcalling has been mediocre. Hopefully it will improve. No reason to freak out. Not a disaster. Not great.

Too many wide running plays. No imagination.

Need to run up the middle and play action to TEs. Keep it simple.

Ran a wheel route earlier and it was dangerously close to becoming a pick six.
