2020 Notre Dame CB Signee Clarence Lewis Continuing to Work

2020 Notre Dame cornerback signee Clarence Lewis‍ has found it hard to get workouts in as the Covid-19 pandemic shut down his local gyms. 

That said, the New Jersey native has been productive on his own.

"It's been different," Lewis told Irish Sports Daily. "I can't go to gyms right now, so it's mostly bodyweight workouts and stuff like that due to the coronavirus and protests.

"I've been getting fieldwork in. I'm trying to work on my off-man stuff and improve my backpedal."

When on the field, the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder may be focused on off-man, but also getting back into the swing of things at cornerback. 

"I think my strength is understanding what the receiver is going to do and man coverage," explained Lewis. "I changed to safety my senior year. I learned more of the game moving to safety, but I didn't really do much at cornerback last year."

"I'm getting more comfortable with it. When we go to the field, we normally do 1-in-1s and I've been able to work on my corner skills instead of safety." 

Notre Dame coaches have also remained in consistent communication with Lewis over the last few months to make sure he's safe.

"At first, it was about keeping my grades up and stuff like that," stated Lewis. "After that, it's been about workouts and how I'm doing. 

"I've been in some of the Zoom meetings as a team. We had a Zoom meeting with the team and the incoming freshmen about school or stuff like that."

While Notre Dame hasn't released a specific date for Lewis and the Fighting Irish to report, he knows time is ticking. 

"As I get closer, it's definitely starting to hit me," Lewis said. "I think when I get there, it's going to hit me that I'm playing college football and it's going to be way different."

Lewis is also making sure to enjoy the last few days with those closest to him. 

"I'll miss my family and friends the most, so I'm spending most of my time with them."
