As Notre Dame continues its ongoing efforts in amplifying social awareness, diversity and working to promote a racially harmonious campus and environment, the school on Tuesday announced a promotion for veteran administrator Angie Torain to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Culture, Diversity and Engagement, per a school release.

“We are thrilled to have Angie accept this new challenge,” Fighting Irish athletics director Jack Swarbrick said in the release. “She has the experience, passion and familiarity with Notre Dame athletics to lead us as we accept the challenge of improving our culture and increasing our impact.

“I look forward to seeing the strides she will help us make as a department."

Maintaining her current position in the oversight of NCAA compliance, Torain also adds duties in charge of the university’s “StaND Together” program. That initiative has a six-pronged platform: Listen, Amplify, Focus, Diversify, Engage and Vote. Additionally, the “StaND Together” program seeks out feedback from the Notre Dame athletics community, per the release.

“I am motivated by the passion of our student-athletes, coaches and staff for wanting to engage in tough conversations and make our department inclusive for all,” said Torain, a 2020 graduate of the prestigious Sports Management Institute. “This is not a position that I’m taking on my own, as we have the whole department rallying to make an impact for Notre Dame, for our community and for our student-athletes.”

An Elkhart native and former DePauw University student-athlete, Torain’s now pivoting towards her fourth year in the Notre Dame athletics department after joining the Irish staff in 2017. She previously served as deputy athletics director and senior women’s administrator (SWA) at Incarnate Word in Texas.

“Even though I grew up near South Bend, Notre Dame did not seem like an option for me,” said Torain, who also earned a law degree from Indiana University. “What excites me about this new role is the opportunity to help others see that Notre Dame can be for them if they so desire.”
