Holmes: I'm Out
Off the field, Notre Dame probably couldn’t have been much of a better fit for Corey Holmes, but he was never able to make the kind of impact he hoped for on the field, so the wide receiver from Florida has decided to transfer.
“I’m out,” Holmes said.
After seeing spot duty as a freshman, Holmes sat out as a sophomore to preserve a year of eligibility before catching 11 passes for 96 yards this year. A large portion of that output – four receptions and 29 yards – came in the season finale against USC.
“I feel like I’m starting to run out of time as I’m getting older,” Holmes told Irish Sports Daily. “I just don’t see myself being the featured receiver.
“I think it’s up to me to go find a place where I can be the featured receiver and still have a chance of fulfilling that dream I have of going to the next level and being able to play in the NFL.”
Holmes will finish out the year as a student in South Bend in order to receive his degree, but said, “I already got my release.”
It’s early, but he has an eye on some schools already.
“I’m considering the University of Miami, North Carolina is another one, Syracuse, UCLA, Arizona and Arizona State,” said Holmes. “I hope to hear from schools like that, that I heard from during the recruiting process.”
While his on-the-field career in South Bend didn’t play out the way he hoped, he’ll cherish the relationships he made at Notre Dame.
“It went great. I really made some great friends. I really couldn’t name one kid in my time here in the locker room that I didn’t have a relationship with, who I wasn’t cool with, the regular students here. There isn’t too much bad stuff I can say. Aside from my football career, I really enjoyed everything else.”
