While many other high school football players have seen their seasons postponed or cancelled altogether, 2021 Notre Dame tight end commit Cane Berrong‍ and his Hart County High School squad have been busy getting ready.

“We’re rocking and rolling,” Berrong told Irish Sports Daily.

Their regular season will kick off on Sept. 4th and Berrong is excited about the season.

“I think we’re going to be really good this year,” he said. “Our quarterback was hurt last year, so we ran the ball a lot. I think we’re going to throw the ball more this year. I’m just excited about getting more receptions and showing my speed after the catch.

“My personal goal is trying to do as much as I can.”

Berrong believes the work he put in during the offseason will help him accomplish just that.

“I was kind of like 220, 225 last year,” he explained. “Now, I’m like 235 and I move a lot faster. I was fast last year, but just laterally and more explosive off the ball is what I feel like I’ve improved on the most.

“Thanks to Coach (Jonathan) Loudermilk at 180 Sports. During this whole COVID stuff, I was able to work out with him and he got me right.”

Berrong was one of Notre Dame’s first members in the Class of 2021, committing to the Irish over a year ago. He’s been excited to watch the group swell to 18 current members today.

“It’s great,” he said. “I’m just building more relationships with the guys I’m going to be playing with and winning a national championship with. Just seeing we’re getting more and more and building it up is just great. It’s just exciting to watch.”

Berrong has welcomed fellow tight end Mitchell Evans to the group after Evans’ commitment back in July.

“He’s a great dude,” Berrong said of Evans. “We talk in the group chat and stuff like that. We’ve exchanged PlayStation usernames, so we might get in the game here soon.”

Berrong isn’t concerned about having to compete for playing time.

“I don’t care if they bring in eight tight ends, I know me. I’m just excited to get pushed by everybody. It’s going to make me better at the end of the day.”
