2022 Notre Dame QB Target Steve Angeli Looks Sharp In Season-Opener

October 8, 2020

After an extremely long offseason, Steve Angeli‍ was excited to get back out on the field with his Bergen Catholic High School teammates last weekend.

The 2022 New Jersey quarterback and his teammates defeated St. Joseph Regional 24-21. Angeli completed 17 of 29 passes for 220 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the season-opener.

“First and foremost, we’re just so blessed to be able to play and have a season unlike other states,” Angeli said afterward. “It’s just so much fun to finally get back out there and play the sport I’ve loved since I was a little kid, be the leader, be the starter and have my team score points on offense. Overall, it was just really fun and I was just so happy to be out there again with my teammates.

“I felt really comfortable. I was very prepared for this game. My guys were very prepared. I trust my o-line, my wide receivers, my coaches and most importantly, our defense.”

Angeli was pleased with how he spread the ball around to different playmakers with the reads he made, the accuracy of his throws and how he was able to show off his athleticism and playmaking ability when things broke down.

But it wasn’t perfect.

“Obviously, we’re trying to win every game, but most importantly, do everything right,” he said. “Don’t have mental errors, don’t have mental mistakes. Be 100 percent there efficiency-wise. Execution-wise, we want to be 100 percent in every single game.

“We weren’t this past week, but we’ve got to look it over and change some stuff up. We’re excited to carry over the energy to next week.”

As for recruiting, Angeli, who has offers from schools Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, LSU, Oregon, Miami and Nebraska among several others, says everything is going great.

He was impressed with a virtual tour of Notre Dame he took on Monday along with Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and recruiting coordinator Brian Polian.
Angeli spoke about the virtual visit in-depth here.

Before the COVID closures, Angeli had a chance to take visits to Rutgers, Pitt, Penn State and Ohio State. So far, he’s taken virtual visits to Rutgers, West Virginia, Northwestern and Michigan State.

“I’m definitely scheduling a couple others as well,” he said.

He definitely wants to make visits before choosing a school, but at this point, it’s not clear when the dead period will be lifted.

“They’re just saying we have to wait until the end of the season, end of the year, wait until the spring recruiting cycle comes around and that’s when they’re hoping things will go back to normal. But these are all hopes, nothing is really set in stone and we really don’t know.”
