When you’re having a season like the one Notre Dame is having, the hope is that it starts to pay off on the recruiting trail. It has to an extent in the 2021 class, but it has not in the 2022 class.

Until today.

4-star prospect Ty Chan‍ jumped on board with a commitment to join “O-line U”. He’s the second 4-star commitment joining Joey Tanona‍. A good athlete with a big frame, Chan showed plenty of signs as a sophomore that project him to be a very good player at the college level.

Height: 6’6”

Weight: 275

Projected Position: Offensive tackle

ISD Grade: 90 (4-star)

National Average Grade: 90.7 (4-star)

What he does best:

After the size box is checked with a tackle prospect, the ability to bend is critical. Chan shows that and he also moves easily to the second level.

He’s got some good pop out of his stance. Chan has some violent flashes in the running game. Any time you see an offensive lineman snap a defenders head back on contact, that’s a good sign.

The ability to react and adjust is critical in pass protection. Though he is raw with his technique, he can mirror and react really like he does when combatting this rip move.

There is a theme here. He’s a very good athlete for his size who plays basketball and on the defensive line. His movement there and overall twitch stand out. It’s a big part of what makes him an intriguing prospect.

What he needs to improve:

Footwork is at the top and that’s going to be that way for a lot of young linemen. He will false step at times, which is something he can get away with at his level of competition. That won’t happen in college.

He needs work in a lot of areas, especially with his hand placement and working off of double teams. It’s a shame that he doesn’t have any junior film to see what kind of progress he has made with his overall game.

What’s his ceiling?

I really like this pickup for Notre Dame. This is a player with left tackle traits who is only scratching the surface of the player he is going to become. I love his athleticism and his natural pop off the ball.

At this point I wouldn’t describe him as a mauler in the run game or anything close to a technician in pass protection, but the pieces are there for him to develop into a stud. He’s a 4-star prospect to me with the potential to be a multi-year starter. I would not be shocked to see him make a leap with his ranking when he can get back to playing ball again.
