No. 2 Notre Dame vs. No. 3 Clemson | ACC Championship Game

Bank of America Stadium | 4:00 p.m. ET | ABC

Game Week Articles | Roster| Depth Chart Schedule |Staff Predictions

Part II

Most folks had Notre Dame-Clemson meeting on November 7th circled on their calendar for a year (if not more) and it delivered with a double-overtime thriller. It’d be hard to top part two, but it’s clear both teams have chips on their shoulders entering Saturday’s ACC Championship Game in Charlotte.

Clemson is out for revenge as they would love nothing more than to make up for the loss in South Bend as they’ll have several key pieces back this time around. Notre Dame enters the game as a double-digit underdog and has yet to get the national respect despite winning the game in November.

Folks can talk about Trevor Lawrence all they want and while his presence can’t be understated, the return of Clemson defensive tackle Tyler Davis is much more significant. Davis is a special talent and he’ll be facing the weakest link on the Notre Dame offense as the Irish are missing starting center Jarrett Patterson. Josh Lugg looks to get the nod and while experienced, he lacks experience at center. If Davis can cause havoc up the middle, Notre Dame’s offense could struggle as those running lanes Ian Book loves to take will be less frequent and the run game will also be challenged.

Notre Dame can play physical and if they bring it as they did the first time around, the Irish will compete. Clemson’s offensive line can be taken advantage of and Notre Dame knows it.

It’s also worth noting, Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea has accepted the Vanderbilt head coaching job, while Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott will interview for the Auburn head coaching gig on Sunday.

Players To Watch

Notre Dame RB Kyren Williams
He's been a difference-maker all season and that especially stood out with his performance against Clemson running and in blitz pickup. Notre Dame will need him to be just as good today to get the win.

Clemson WR Cornell Powell
He's been a beast over the last four games. He's averaging close to 20 yards per reception and 133 yards per game. In the previous matchup, he had two receptions over 50 yards. Notre Dame can't let him go off like he did last time. The Irish need Clarence Lewis to play his best game of the season.

Notre Dame DE Ade Ogundeji
The pass rush wasn't good enough until the very end of the last game. They'll need a better performance to make an impact against Trevor Lawrence and it starts with Ogundeji. Lawrence is only a 37% passer when pressured this season.

Clemson LB James Skalski
Skalski is a player to watch not just because he's the quarterback of their defense or because he missed the previous game. It's also because he hasn't looked right since coming back from injury and he had to leave the game against Virginia Tech early. His backup is out and if Skalski isn't close to his best, it could go from a plus to a minus.

Quotes of the Week

Notre Dame RB Kyren Williams:
“We know as an offense that no matter what it is, we have to establish the run by any means. We're going to get that done, so we can open up more plays down the field."

"We have to be consistent. Play the band of football we know how to play and execute to a high level and make no mistakes. We know what we have to do and we're going to do what we got to do."

Notre Dame DE Daelin Hayes:
"At the end of the day, you have to go play ball. Your ball is going to speak for itself. Playing ball the right way, the brand of football we like to play - that's going to put us where we need to be.

"As long as we stay focused on that - we go out and play hard and the standard of the brotherhood, then the narrative, the stories, this and that will all take care of itself."

Notre Dame S Kyle Hamilton:
"I even just got reminded he was the head coach at Vanderbilt today. I had kind of forgot. It's obvious he's still focused on Notre Dame and winning a championship here."

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly:
"Our mission is to graduate and win championships. So this is part of what we build this for. This is the culmination of this long season, and we're not there yet. WE have not fulfilled the goal that we all got when we were afforded this very unique opportunity. We're extremely grateful that the ACC has given us this opportunity. It's like anything else, you want to finish the deal. Our guys want to finish it off with an ACC Championship.”

Defense is completely out schemed. Losing Lea must have had an effect. Offense is pretty typical of what we have seen this season with the exception that Clemson is completely shutting down our running game.

For those who were upset over lack of respect because Clemson was missing their starting QB and others...well they were right. It made a BIG difference.

One stop.

One possession at a time.

This team can choose to dig deep and make the second half respectable, and earn a CFP berth, or fold and rightfully have to sweat missing out.

The players have to play better, and the coaches have to coach better, but this is not some kind of total massacre.

It's undisciplined D giving up big plays, and an inability to execute in the red zone (missed FGs, drops, etc.).

I didn't want to believe that narrative that Lawrence not playing was such a huge difference in that first game, because DJ played so great for them. It has made all the difference.

I will say though that this game turned on us when we were not able to score a touchdown in the red zone after marching it down the field on our first two possessions. It could have been 14-0...completely different game. It all boils down to execution in the red zone. We've been mediocre all year in that area

Bigger difference is that meat head Skalski and Patterson being hurt. We can't do a thing between the tackles.

I don't even know if I want ND to go to the playoffs. Let's see how the second half goes.

I hate how this would happen to every team not named Alabama and we have to take the abuse just because we're the 3rd-4th best all the time, just outside the top tier. If anyone outside of Clemson, Bama, and maybe OSU says anything about this, they can get bent

Clemson is shutting our run game down because in typical ND fashion we come out and start chucking the ball all over. The thing we didn't do all year.

Big difference was we out physicaled them in first game. I'm sure Dabo called them out and they are beating our balls off up front.

Complete joke ,bad coaching on offense and bad coaching on defense What did they work on for the last 2 weeks?
Don't even want to get started on Tommy freaking Rees. His playcalling has been a joke. Book needs to 3 step drop and throw the damn ball.
I have no clue what Lea is trying to do on defense. Gotta win the line if scrimmage. Which ND's defense did last meeting. Clemson's oline isn't that damn good What the hell with this team? They said "they really think there the better team than Clenson. If you say that ,you need to start backing it up.Horrible game plan by the coaches.

Honestly, I have to say that Brian Kelly may just not be that good of a coach. Every time ND gets to the playoffs or an elite bowl game, they get massively outplayed. At some point it has to fall at feet since it's clear that ND gets out-schemed every time and there is never a decent response or counter on his part.

I don't agree. Tommy is trying to run but isn't able to use the clemson aggression against them.

It is a 3 team race every year right now with a team like LSU sneaking in if they hit the jackpot. Everyone else is just pretending.

Absolutely time for HC change if you want to play in these games. He's great for nextvtiee am alot of teams would be happy with that.

We used to be 2 steps slow - we're closer now - just a half step slow. So we get blown out a little more slowly.

Book is still quick to leave the pocket, but at the same time our WR get zero separation. We're just outclassed in every way. We are closer physically, but still way behind in overall quality. We needed perfect execution but just not getting it. Not Kelly's fault or Book's fault. They're just better.

Hopefully we get a little closer in the 2nd half. Go Irish.

Totally agree. That has made a huge difference as well. I guarantee we won't hear a thing about how we were missing one of the better centers in America this time around though. Only that Skalski is the greatest linebacker of all time and Tyler Davis is the second coming of Warren Sapp.

No, it's because our OL is getting worked right now.

Everytime ND tries to run the ball, our backs are getting met behind the line of scrimmage. Every. Time.

Kelly has done great things at ND but he isn't a championship coach. When you cannot recruit and stack elite players three deep you have to develop them, have great coordinators, prepare and execute perfectly against teams like this. It's just too much to expect.

He has proven he is not able to get the team prepared for big games for whatever reason and the lack of elite talent cannot be overcome if your are also out coached this profoundly. This is the highest ND can get on the modern college football mountain I'm afraid..

Notre Dame has returned to the field. Do they have a stop in them? We'll see.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
ND will have to throw on just about every down in the second half, which means Ian Book will just have to take chances and actually pull the trigger. No interceptions and no points won't hack it.

We are averaging 3.7 yards a run last I checked times three we have first downs. And we have been a running team all year have to keep grinding.
