No. 2 Notre Dame vs. No. 3 Clemson | ACC Championship Game

Bank of America Stadium | 4:00 p.m. ET | ABC

Game Week Articles | Roster| Depth Chart Schedule |Staff Predictions

Part II

Most folks had Notre Dame-Clemson meeting on November 7th circled on their calendar for a year (if not more) and it delivered with a double-overtime thriller. It’d be hard to top part two, but it’s clear both teams have chips on their shoulders entering Saturday’s ACC Championship Game in Charlotte.

Clemson is out for revenge as they would love nothing more than to make up for the loss in South Bend as they’ll have several key pieces back this time around. Notre Dame enters the game as a double-digit underdog and has yet to get the national respect despite winning the game in November.

Folks can talk about Trevor Lawrence all they want and while his presence can’t be understated, the return of Clemson defensive tackle Tyler Davis is much more significant. Davis is a special talent and he’ll be facing the weakest link on the Notre Dame offense as the Irish are missing starting center Jarrett Patterson. Josh Lugg looks to get the nod and while experienced, he lacks experience at center. If Davis can cause havoc up the middle, Notre Dame’s offense could struggle as those running lanes Ian Book loves to take will be less frequent and the run game will also be challenged.

Notre Dame can play physical and if they bring it as they did the first time around, the Irish will compete. Clemson’s offensive line can be taken advantage of and Notre Dame knows it.

It’s also worth noting, Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea has accepted the Vanderbilt head coaching job, while Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott will interview for the Auburn head coaching gig on Sunday.

Players To Watch

Notre Dame RB Kyren Williams
He's been a difference-maker all season and that especially stood out with his performance against Clemson running and in blitz pickup. Notre Dame will need him to be just as good today to get the win.

Clemson WR Cornell Powell
He's been a beast over the last four games. He's averaging close to 20 yards per reception and 133 yards per game. In the previous matchup, he had two receptions over 50 yards. Notre Dame can't let him go off like he did last time. The Irish need Clarence Lewis to play his best game of the season.

Notre Dame DE Ade Ogundeji
The pass rush wasn't good enough until the very end of the last game. They'll need a better performance to make an impact against Trevor Lawrence and it starts with Ogundeji. Lawrence is only a 37% passer when pressured this season.

Clemson LB James Skalski
Skalski is a player to watch not just because he's the quarterback of their defense or because he missed the previous game. It's also because he hasn't looked right since coming back from injury and he had to leave the game against Virginia Tech early. His backup is out and if Skalski isn't close to his best, it could go from a plus to a minus.

Quotes of the Week

Notre Dame RB Kyren Williams:
“We know as an offense that no matter what it is, we have to establish the run by any means. We're going to get that done, so we can open up more plays down the field."

"We have to be consistent. Play the band of football we know how to play and execute to a high level and make no mistakes. We know what we have to do and we're going to do what we got to do."

Notre Dame DE Daelin Hayes:
"At the end of the day, you have to go play ball. Your ball is going to speak for itself. Playing ball the right way, the brand of football we like to play - that's going to put us where we need to be.

"As long as we stay focused on that - we go out and play hard and the standard of the brotherhood, then the narrative, the stories, this and that will all take care of itself."

Notre Dame S Kyle Hamilton:
"I even just got reminded he was the head coach at Vanderbilt today. I had kind of forgot. It's obvious he's still focused on Notre Dame and winning a championship here."

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly:
"Our mission is to graduate and win championships. So this is part of what we build this for. This is the culmination of this long season, and we're not there yet. WE have not fulfilled the goal that we all got when we were afforded this very unique opportunity. We're extremely grateful that the ACC has given us this opportunity. It's like anything else, you want to finish the deal. Our guys want to finish it off with an ACC Championship.”

Please show up in the 2nd half. We lose, we lose, but put up a ****ing fight.

Agreed. We got punched in the mouth, and now it's on us to respond.

We may not win this game, but we can win the second half and show we belong in the CFP.

I'm sure the silver-haired old boys club dubbed "the committee" is impressed to all hell at ND

We used to be 2 steps slow - we're closer now - just a half step slow. So we get blown out a little more slowly.

Book is still quick to leave the pocket, but at the same time our WR get zero separation. We're just outclassed in every way. We are closer physically, but still way behind in overall quality. We needed perfect execution but just not getting it. Not Kelly's fault or Book's fault. They're just better.

Hopefully we get a little closer in the 2nd half. Go Irish.

Are we getting blown out slowly? Last time it was 9-3 at halftime. Now it's 24-3.

This is what having hardly any elite talent year after year looks like.

The hypocrisy on this thread is astounding. BK is small timey? We can't beat the big boys? Do you guys even remotely remember Nov 7th? The game we were also supposed to lose. I get, they have their qb back etc. but we manhandled them that game. We pulled it out. We beat the #1 team.

Let's see what the boys are made of in the 2nd half.

I really don't know why people are shocked. This game just shows that there are 3 elite teams in college football - Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State.

Then you have the rest of college football, where I think that ND is near the top. I think the Irish is just a step below Georgia in this second group. However, the Irish are clearly not able to compete with the top-3 teams. They have not been competitive today with a healthy Clemson and they would not be competitive in the playoffs with Alabama or Ohio State.

It's probably worth noting Trevor Lawrence didn't play along with several defensive starters.

Honestly, I have to say that Brian Kelly may just not be that good of a coach. Every time ND gets to the playoffs or an elite bowl game, they get massively outplayed. At some point it has to fall at feet since it's clear that ND gets out-schemed every time and there is never a decent response or counter on his part.

Or maybe he just does a lot with a little. We just have lesser personnel. But we don't let people in who can't read and write. Or people who have criminal difficulty. So we are playing a different game with different rules. Everything went right the first game. Not the case this game. Kelly does about as much as can be done with the constraints he has. We're Too 10 but not Too 5 - we are three playmakers away. And as impressive as Book may have played earlier this year, he can't carry Lawrence's jock. But Book is playing at his potential which is all you can ask. But he is good enough until you get into a game like this - then his shortcomings are exposed.

But it's been a great year. Thanks for trying.

I hope the team comes out with a different attitude. If the D had played that last set of downs, as it did in the OT in the first game, there is no way CU would have gotten that last TD before the half.

TL playing makes Clemson that much better and his team believes he makes that much difference....

For ND it's the same issues weakness in DBs and WRs well they're not 3rd round picks...

The intangible for the D is Lea's leaving. I think the team wanted to really play for him today, but TL makes that much difference...

This team has been great to watch this year and they are capable of so much better than this. Hard to understand the blowouts in big games. I don't want to kick them when they're down but yeah I'm going to be extremely disappointed if they don't man up in 2nd half.

Uh, because we watched the game on November 7th. ND showed, at the very least, they could compete with Clemson even with Lawrence. The execution and physicality today is nowhere near where it was in that game.

Also, have to object to Ohio State. They've proven nothing and struggled against a mediocre Northwestern team earlier today. I don't think they are going to fare much better against Clemson if they end up matched with them.
