Vito Campanile has repeatedly talked about his reverence for Notre Dame and the Bergen Catholic head coach has encouraged all of his players fortunate enough to get an Irish offer to consider it very seriously.

Steve Angeli‍ was fortunate enough to get an Irish offer, but he didn’t need to be pushed to consider it seriously.

On Thursday evening, the 2022 New Jersey quarterback announced his commitment to Notre Dame over offers from schools like Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, LSU and Oregon among several others.

“I think it's a great fit on every level,” Campanile said. “Obviously, as I say, all the time to you, I think it's a really good fit for what our school's about and what Notre Dame is about.

“The thing that stands out to me is unwavering support of one another, there's going to be solidarity in everything that we do. We're going to stand for team first. We're going to be committed to the tradition of our school. We're going to have the courage to get out in front of everything, we're willing to compete with the very best.

“Our goal at Bergen Catholic is always to be the number one football team in New Jersey. I think the goal at Notre Dame is to be the number one football team in America. It's very rare that kids get the opportunity to have that common message driven into their mindset every day for both high school and the college experience. I appreciate that.”

Notre Dame offensive coordinator/quarterback coach Tommy Rees and tight ends coach John McNulty led up Angeli’s recruitment with head coach Brian Kelly taking a personal interest as well.

“He's built great rapport with Coach Rees in particular and obviously knowing John McNulty since he was a freshman in high school is really an added benefit,” Campanile said. “And Coach Kelly and everything that he's about. To me, I appreciate that it's a very common message that he's getting from Coach Kelly and his staff to the message that I try to instill in our guys here.

“For me, I think it's a great fit. I think he feels really good about it, so I couldn't be happier for him.”

Campanile also believes it’s a great fit for Angeli on the field.

“I think Stevie is a great blender of both,” the coach said. “He could pull the ball down. He's shown that he can read into the defensive linemen to make plays. He's good at the Zone Read. At the same time, he could really get in a 2-back offense and crush you with playaction pass. You have to defend the whole field against him.

“When a kid can pull down and run a 4.6 down the middle of the field, but then can rip a 20-yard out route, I've doing this a long time, those guys are really hard to find. That makes it a little different. Now, he's 6-3-plus and he's 220 pounds. That's a special athlete.”
