When I first heard Notre Dame was ineligible to receive a bye under the new rules of the College Football Playoff expansion, my immediate reaction was that this was it. The moment Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick agreed to this, it was the end of being an Independent in football.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that it wouldn’t make much sense for Notre Dame to do that.
