Coach | Notre Dame CB Target Jayden Bellamy A "Can't-Miss" Kid
As Jayden Bellamy prepares to announce where he’ll play at the next level, his head coach takes responsibility for the 2022 New Jersey cornerback prospect still having so much room for growth.
“Did I do him a disservice putting him at safety?” Bergen Catholic head coach Vito Campanile asks himself.
“He doesn't look the part of a strong safety, but he might be the best tackler I've ever coached in 21 years. He gets downhill and he's fearless and he looks like a lean cover guy.”
The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder will announce his commitment to either Notre Dame, Penn State and Rutgers on Friday.
Not specializing at his future position during his high school season only means Bellamy’s ceiling at corner is that much higher at the next level.
“Oh my God, yeah,” Campanile says. “I think like a lot of people don't realize how great of a cover kid he is because he's kind of played the quarterback of our defense.”
On top of that, Bellamy is one of 2022 Notre Dame quarterback commit Steve Angeli’s favorite targets on the offensive side of the ball.
“The other thing is he's one of only two kids who played both ways for us at Bergen,” Campanile says. “I think he had six plays of over 50 yards on receptions last year. Steve likes to find him.
“He's just an amazing teammate, an unbelievable character kid. There's no BS to the kid. He's never going to carry on. He's just a humble kid, so quiet and just a great football player.”
But it’s that potential at cornerback that Campanile recognizes, which makes Bellamy a top prospect.
“He is the most patient cover guy that you're going to find anywhere,” his coach says, :He never panicks, has unbelievable ball skills.
“Where I think he's just a can't-miss guy is he covers as good as anybody you're going to find. I really feel like he's as good of a cover guy as there is in our state and then his tackling ability is why we put them on safety. He just gets downhill and he does an amazing job tackling.”
Bellamy has been to Rutgers several times and took official visits to Notre Dame and Penn State in June.
