Patience pays off.

Notre Dame receivers coach Del Alexander was patient and got his guy as 2022 Union (Wash.) receiver Tobias Merriweather‍ has committed to the Fighting Irish.

"The biggest decision for me was the coaching staff there and how we connected and we were on the same page,” said Merriweather. “It's a great school for football and a great school for academics. I think it's a great school for me for the next four years and next 40 years after that."

Merriweather took official visits to Notre Dame and Stanford in June, but a couple things really stood out to the Washington native after he had time to digest the two trips.

"At some point, you've got to think about the stage that you're playing on," Merriweather's father, Dom, said. "We know Notre Dame is on TV every single weekend. It doesn't matter what time you play. You could play at 2:00 AM and it's going to be a live broadcast across the world."

Psychology is the field Merriweather wants to go into and Notre Dame hit a grand slam as he was able to connect with Dr. Amber Selking, who has served as a mental performance coach for the football team since 2017.

"He was able to have a conversation with her and talk to somebody who is not only in the field that he wants to go into, but also who works directly with the team and who he'll interact with a lot," said Mr. Merriweather.

"She is on the field and everything like that. I think that was one thing that helped Notre Dame."

The four-star prospect is exactly what Alexander needed in the class as the 6-foot-4, 185-pounder is not only big, but explosive and has good genes.

Merriweather's father coaches track, while his twin sisters are top track athletes at Oklahoma.

"What makes him such a special player?" asks Union head coach Rory Rosenbach. "He's 6-5, he's 190. He's really fast and he's got really good hands.

"Physically, he is pretty unique and pretty special. I think what helps him other than just that he is a genetic freak is that he grew up in a family of athletes."
