CJ Williams Pledges To Make Notre Dame Fans Proud
CJ Williams was always looking at more than just football and the 2022 California wide receiver said so on Sunday afternoon, when he announced his commitment to Notre Dame.
“I really feel like the culture there is really what set them apart,” said the Mater Dei High School star, who chose the Irish over his other finalists, USC, Stanford, Alabama and Texas.
“Every single one of these schools is a very, very great academic school with a very, very good football program. But at the end of the day, only one school I can go to, right?
"I feel like the determining factor that set Notre Dame apart was just the way that they kind of treat each other there and the way that they deviate from the rest. It's a faith-based school. That really plays a role in my life. I think that was something that was important in my recruiting.”
Williams took official visits to Notre Dame, Stanford and Texas in basically a one-week period in June, which helped the Irish cement their front-runner status.
“I want to be around like-minded people that make me a better person and the people who are going to be with me every day,” Williams said. “I was just looking back and I was like, 'These are guys that I want to invite to my wedding one day.'”
Williams joins fellow Tobias Merriweather, who committed on Wednesday, and Amorion Walker to give Notre Dame a trio of receivers in the Class of 2022.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder promised Irish fans they’ll be proud of his effort and to have him be a representative of the program and the school.
“The Irish are getting a very, very hardworking dude,” he said. “I will give you my all every time I step on that field for as long as I'm there. And even after that, I'm still going to represent you as a person, as a young man.
“I feel like Irish are just getting a competitor. At the end of the day, that's what I do. I'm there to win football games and get a good degree and hopefully make a lot of Irish happy while I'm there.”
