Notre Dame Freshman TE Cane Berrong Out for The Season

According to multiple sources, ISD has learned Notre Dame freshman tight end Cane Berrong will miss the rest of the 2021 season with a torn ACL.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder suffered the non-contact injury during Tuesday’s practice as the Irish got in a few practices during the bye week.

Berrong made his Notre Dame debut on special teams against Wisconsin and has played in both games since the Irish beat the Badgers in Chicago.

The Georgia native got his first snaps on offense last Saturday in Blacksburg as he filled in for sophomore tight end Michael Mayer, who was dealing with an adductor strain.

Notre Dame’s tight end room will likely be tested over the next few weeks as they’ll be missing Berrong and sophomore Kevin Bauman, who is in the process of returning from a broken fibula suffered in week one against Florida State. The good news is Brian Kelly stated Bauman is on schedule to return after six weeks.

Berrong’s injury could leave Notre Dame with three scholarship tight ends for the USC game assuming Mayer is ready to go. Senior George Takacs and true freshman Mitchell Evans have played roles on offense the entire year, but they could see a bump in their roles until Bauman returns.
