Notre Dame lost on Monday night to St. Mary’s in the Maui Invitational and now the Fighting Irish get the honor of playing “host” Chaminade, a Division II school.
This game is simple. Bounce back.
And it starts with making Paul Atkinson Jr. the focal point of the offense. Atkinson was 1-of-2 from the field for two points in the first half, but the grad transfer went 5-of-7 and scored 11 points in the second half.
Atkinson can score on the block and he’s also a skilled passer. Notre Dame has shooters, but they've relied too much on players creating shots for themselves, which isn't a strength for anyone outside of Prentiss Hubb and Blake Wesley.
Speaking of Wesley, the freshman provided a first half spark with five points, but had a few growing pains in the final 20 minutes.
Mike Brey can put his freshman in some better spots and Wesley will be up for the task as he's been anything but passive on the offensive end.
"I'm still trying to figure out how to help us offensively," said Brey. "We know we got something down low with Paul, but then what are we doing with our ball screening and who is driving and Blake Wesley's starting to become a really important guy for us and got to figure out how to weaponize him more."
Notre Dame should win with ease tonight, but if not, buckle up.
