Mike Brey Notebook | Boston College Loss

Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey spoke following the disappointing loss to Boston College on Friday night.

On the loss:
"You have to give a lot of credit to Boston College. I thought they came out and punched us in the mouth - crushed us on the backboard and we never really recovered.

"They played great. I think Earl (Grant) has done a fabulous job quickly staying old and getting old guys. We were on our heels the whole night.

"You're lucky one of those only counts as one league loss. That was thorough. We gotta go back to the drawing board a little before we play again and we play a pretty good team next Saturday. It's not like we can hang our heads. It's coming at us fast."

On Boston College's defense:
"I think their defense is excellent. He (Earl Grant) does a great job. I think he's one of the bright young coaches in the profession and I told him that on the road this summer.

"Watching them play before we played them tonight and then seeing it live, they do what they do. They guard you. They grind you on offense and they just beat you up on the backboard. I think they had 7, 8,9, 10 offensive rebounds by halftime. (Nate) Laszewski and (Paul) Atkinson have actually rebounded pretty good for us, but tonight it looked like varsity versus JV. We got exactly what we deserved.

"Very impressed with how they're playing and with who they have. We have to see them again."

On game getting out of hand:
"We really got frustrated because of how they were guarding us. We like to throw it to Atkinson in the post and play off him. We never were really able to do that and then he missed a couple. I think it was great defense and now we're kind of lost a little bit.

"We are playing a young guard who has had flashes of great stuff, but he was playing against some 21-22-year-olds tonight. We got to keep helping him.

"We brought (Prentiss) Hubb off the bench and I think it helped him. He's been struggling and I thought he found a rhythm. I'm trying to find a few silver linings and it is December 3rd. I know our two big guys are disappointed because they've played better."

On Boston College's big men:
"Every jump hook - we were afraid to help in the post a little bit. We actually played some zone and that helped us a little bit. Every post move that any of them made - jump hooks off the backboard from eight feet, those are hard shots. They made every one of them. We probably gave up some angles early."
