Recruitment Rundown
Staes initially committed to Penn State, but determined he was looking for something different. Academics played a significant factor in Staes getting to campus and sold him on Notre Dame being the fit for him. John McNulty did an excellent job here and Staes also saw fellow Georgia native Tommy Tremble have great success in the blue and gold.

I think Staes is a plus in a lot of categories. I’m not sure if he’s elite in any one.
That’s why his ceiling for me is that he can be a starter for Notre Dame, which translates to an NFL Draft pick, but not necessarily a Mackey Award contender.
I like him a lot as a prospect. I see a ton of potential for him to be a consistent target in the middle of the field once he physically develops at Notre Dame.

"After my decommitment, Notre Dame was one of the first schools that came really hard after me. It all picked up quickly with them after the offer. We were doing almost two Zooms a week. I was talking to Coach McNulty and Coach Rees every day on the phone."
"I already knew about Notre Dame's history at the position, everything offered from an academic standpoint and what they've been doing lately with the football program. As soon as I got the offer and learned more about the coaches and program, I was starting to get really excited about it.
"As we kept going in the recruiting process, I was talking to other schools and Notre Dame started to make more and more sense after I got done with every week. I thought back each week on every call I had with all the coaches and it made sense for me."
