So, why did Preston Zinter choose Notre Dame?
“The question in my mind is, why not ND?” the top 2023 Massachusetts athlete told Irish Sports Daily prior to going public with his commitment to the Irish on Friday afternoon.
“They have everything in a program that I’m looking for. They are one of the elite football programs in the country and one of the best academic schools in the country.”
Among many others, Zinter chose Notre Dame over offers from schools like Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, USC, Penn State and Michigan – where his brother Zak is a top offensive lineman.
“ND has a ton of tradition, and a strong sense of brotherhood which is all important to me,” he continued.
Zinter informed Marcus Freeman and the coaching staff of his decision late last week.
“I was on a FaceTime call with Coach Freeman, (Nick) Lezynski, (James) Laurinaitis and Chad Bowen when I told them,” the Central Catholic High School standout explained. “They went crazy! Just all super excited!”
And Zinter is super excited as well.
“I can’t wait to get on campus and get to work with the guys and coaches,” he said. “Coach Freeman is building something special and I’m excited to be a part of that!”
The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder could play either side of the ball at the next level and while he’s listed as an athlete by many analysts, the Irish are bringing him in as a linebacker.
“I’ll bring a strong work ethic, leadership, and a strong commitment to the team that I’ll do whatever it’s going to take to be a winning team,” he said. “I’ll be all in, a great teammate.”
Zinter gives Notre Dame nine current commits in the Class of 2023 and is the second linebacker in the group, joining Drayk Bowen. He plans on trying to bring in more players.
“I’m definitely going to be reaching out and talking to other recruits,” he said.
“My message to them would be, ‘Coach Freeman and this team are building something special. If you want to be part of a special group that’s going to bring the National Championship back to South Bend, come join us!’”
