Rees Back at Notre Dame as QB Coach

Notre Dame hired former quarterback Tom Rees as its new quarterback coach. Rees was a three-year starter for the Irish and 2013 graduate of Notre Dame.

“When I finished my playing career and graduated from Notre Dame, I wanted to do two things,” said Rees in a statement. “First, I wanted to coach, and second, at some point in my career, I hoped to get an opportunity to return and do it at my alma mater. I didn’t know when or if this opportunity might present itself, but I’m so grateful and honored that it did. I’m ready to get things rolling with this great staff and group of student-athletes.”

Rees has a history with head coach Brian Kelly and the two will reunite in the coaching world, which Kelly is excited about.

“I’m very excited to have Tom join our staff,” said Brian Kelly in the statement. “He possesses an understanding of the game, and most importantly the quarterback position, that’s unique. He’s a true student of the game and great communicator that will offer immediate dividends toward guiding our quarterback room.

“As a former quarterback at Notre Dame, Tom also has a rare ability to truly relate with the quarterbacks on our roster. He’s literally sat in their seat, dealt with the ups and downs, faced the criticism, deflected the praise, and all that comes with playing the position at Notre Dame. He can genuinely mentor them -- not only on the football field but in the classroom and the community as well.”

Rees returns to Notre Dame after being an offensive assistant for the San Diego Chargers in 2016. The Chargers ranked seventh in the NFL in passing, ninth in scoring and 14th in total offense.

In 2015, Rees started his coaching career at Northwestern as an offensive graduate assistant. Northwestern went 10-3 and finished ranked No. 23.

Rees also ranked top five in school history in 21 different categories and will now coach Brandon Wimbush, Ian Book, Montgomery VanGorder and Avery Davis in his first season at Notre Dame.

I actually like this hire. I know many won't.
I think he might bring a unique perspective to what it takes to be a QB at ND, and recruit personalities that can handle the pressure. I will bet at the end of the day, based on what I have read on Jurkovec, that they will connect.

Does this mean Coach Kelly is moving to CEO of football operations? ND can only have 9 full time coaches. Lol I kid I kid.

does not seem like he will be a dynamic recruiter...he does seem to possess the knowledge of becoming a great QB, let's see if he can impart that on others

You could be correct but there's no way of telling at this point what level recruiter he can/will be.

I love the hire. First, I think he will be an excellent mentor to each of the QBs for reasons described in the article. Second, I think he knows a helluva lot about being a QB. For a man of modest physical talent, he was very productive for ND. If there were a way to measure production/talent and express it in a ratio, his ratio would be off the charts.

The unknown is his teaching ability, but I am more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

This is a great hire IMO. Rees knows what to expect from Kelly, being the QB at ND, the media and the fans. He can help guide the younger QB's as well as protect them at times. He always had a bright football IQ, he just never had the physical skills to execute it.

Why does he not seem like he would be a dynamic recruiter to you? I'm just curious. He's young and can relate to the kids more than the older guys can, usually the younger guys have more success recruiting.

To all you tepid/doubtful posters... this is a great hire for all the obvious reasons. If you feel any angst, have to wonder if you have any ND experience beyond your recent post, and if you don't then you won't ever get its potential impact on a young, talented, in-search-of-excellence Irish team.

Has TR had even one year as an actual assistant coach? He certainly is starting at the top. Or what once was the top.

I'm fine with the hire but a little bit puzzled. We appear to now have 10 coaches!

Oh yea, like Kelly still won't be doing most of the qb coaching.
